Given that it is already very hard to get into an endo program for students right out of dental school unless they have stellar grades/class rank, how does this process work for students who go to pass/fail schools? I know a couple of schools where they actually do a top third, middle third, and bottom third that is supposed to be pass/ fail but even then that is not as specific information for class ranking. So how do u get into an endo program if you go to a school like that?
Also boards are pass/fail too but I wonder if you still get the specific number score ? That number score could be used I guess.

fortunately my school grades and ranks. i was accepted to endo this year and i'm a D4 now. what i felt was important other than grades was showing interest in endo. i shadowed and assisted at about 10 offices, and assisted even more residents at different programs. i did 2 externships (1 general, 1 endo-specific). visited a handful of programs for a day or 2. i also did research and presented at any conferences i could get into (local, regional, AADR/IADR). I was asked about both experience and research at my interview. I also do have top grades though, so i'm sure that helped me get the foot in the door. Nonetheless, I hope my advice on shadowing exposure was at least a little helpful.

as far as boards go, even if you pass you don't get a score. no one every sees a score. if you fail, supposedly they tell you what you lacked in. beginning next year there is supposed to be an additional exam, the advanced dental admission test (http://www.ada.org/en/education-careers/advanced-dental-admission-test/). that exam will give you a number grade and i'm sure a lot of programs will be relying on that if you don't have school grades/GPA.

if you apply a few years out of dental school, grades are much much MUCH less important.
