Hey guys, I'm a sophomore and if I don't get at least a 70 on my physics final, I'll fail the course. Obviously I've been studying my ass off in order to at least pass the class, but I do realize that the possibility is there. I was just wondering if you guys have ever failed a course or know someone who has and still got into dental school.

Also, if I do pass I'll probably have a D or D- for the class. Should I move onto physics 2 next semester? Should I retake physics 1?

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds and if you're applying to dental school then good luck!

You will need to retake the course before taking Physics II. This is a prerequisite class for dental school and thus you need to at least get a C in it in order for it to count. Retake it and make sure you aim for an A. Then move onto Physics II the next semester. Good luck👍

And yes there are plenty of dental students who failed a course or even received a D and still got a into dental school.

This may be a dumb question, is it too late to drop? I forget how late the W date is...if not, definitely retake and try to do really well! Maybe even take it at a different school?
Gluck!

It was like a month ago. I was thinking of just taking Physics 1 and 2 at a community college this summer. Would dental schools mind if I did that?

I'm sure if I took them at a community college I'd get A's.

I failed Chemistry II in my freshman year of college...retook it during the summer and got an A....I have been accepted into UMDNJ and Temple this application cycle

so if you happen to fail a course...MAKE SURE u get an A when u retake it...and when u interview u better have an excuse as to y u failed...like..."I initially had trouble adjusting to the college environment during my freshman year, but when I finally got my priorities straight I finished my final years of college with a new found sense of determination and vigor".....or sumthing like that...hopefully not as cheesy as what I just wrote lol

No, dont take it at a CC. Adcoms know what you are thinking.

No you wont unless you go to a really easy CC. Not at my CC.
Dont underestimate CC.

Failed third quarter of ochem, retook it and got a B+. Just got into a couple schools. I really prepared for the interviews and I have a lot of ec's and work experience though.

If I were you I would first try and find out why I failed, ie.. poor time management, prioritizing, study skills, teaching, ect... Find this out before you jump into it again.

Don't take at a CC.

No, I didn't mean it like that. I just had a couple other courses where I had to spend so much time on that I didn't get to pay enough attention to physics. I wasn't trying to rag on CCs.

Thank you so much man, I just need some sort of encouragement. Congrats by the way!

Good job man! Congrats. I feel like I have those things going for me too so hopefully I can use things like that to give me a stronger application.

It was definitely poor time management, I started playing football for my school and I had a couple other things going on which kind of messed me up. I've definitely got to work on it, because I'm not willing to trim down the amount of ec's I do.

Remember that usually, no amount of ECs will make up for bad grades, so make school your #1 priority. Develop that killer instinct, haha.

Re-take when you're ready and gun it. Good luck!

one failure is ok or better yet can you drop the class?

The school I was accepted to this year advised me to take Physics at a CC. I got accepted to the school w/o having 1 or 2.. They dont really care about physics

The dean at my school told me not to take it at a CC.

What is your GPA? Was it a retake or your first time taking Physic?

Study your *** off. Then, be clutch like Kobe in the 4th quarter and get a 90+ for a C!

I wish but even if I get 100 I will not get a C unless my professor saw that I improved and decided to bump me up. It's something nice to think about, but I assume it won't.

Oh. Didn't know you were in that big of a hole. In that case, all you can do is try your best and hope for the best. I'm sure your Professor will bump you up if you show enough improvement. If not, a failure is bad, but it's not the end of the world. Students have managed to get into D-school with one bad grade.

retake it before moving on. i have a friend who got an F in a class, retook it and got an A. he's in his first year of dental school now.

if you had a C in it, they (adcoms) may let it slide. but not for anything lower.

I was in the same boat as you.. had a 30 going into my final calc exam my first semester at university and pulled off a D-. Got accepted this app cylce. I had to retake calc in 3rd year and got a B+...Still not the A i was hoping for. So it is possible.. as long as you show you can handle the material at some point you should be OK.

I was at a CC my first year of college. My first term I got a C in Biology. My other 3 years were at a state school and I got a D in trig. I just worked hard and rocked a bunch of upper level science courses, O Chem, etc. I was accepted this cycle by a pretty decent school. I think they expect mistakes to be made, just keep working hard. Try to enjoy yourself too, don't stress out too much.

My gpa is a 3.8... with all of my dental school prereqs coming from CC... I am telling you the truth

I went to community college for my first 2 years of college. I don't see any problem with CC courses, but im not sure about retaking at CC. I didn't apply to that many dental schools because I wanted to stay around my home state, but it terms of percentage I got interviewed at 60% of the schools I applied to so far. As long as you rock a CC course, an A is still an A.

Agree

I was just curious about how they deal with calculating gpa when re-taking a class. Do they factor in both the original grade and the grade after the class is taken again? How does that work?

They take the avg of the grades combined... That sux

I got an F in a CNA class about 8 years ago. It was before I go to college. That makes me nervous.

The average is implied numerically, but schools see both grades. Both grades show up on your AADSAS file and both are used to calculate your GPAs.

I had 11 interviews and 5 acceptances with one W, two C's, and a terrible first attempt at the DAT. Good luck and stay the course!
