Getting into DO with a C-?

I have a GPA and MCAT that is competitive with all DO schools and have good ECs.I have one C- and just applied. My plan was to retake the C- before matriculation but is it possible they will not even consider me until the C- is retaken?

I wouldn't worry too much about 1 C-. as long as your overally gpa is good it shouldn't matter that much. what was it in? I had a C- in gen chem 1 but then got a A- in gen chem 2. If you can show progression I think that says something.

Just make sure your C- isn't in a class that fulfills the requirements for the schools you're applying to. A C- in gen chem, organic chem, or physics has to be retaken. A C- in a bio class is ok as long as you have more than enough credits to meet their minimum amount after you remove the C-.
They might still consider you as long as you indicate that it's in your planned coursework.

I'm not sure about LECOM's policies, but virtually everywhere else anything less than a C in a prerequisite is unacceptable. The C- in gen chem 1 would have to be retaken.

Many, if I remember correctly. Definitely KCUMB and NSU.

ATSU-SOMA, AZCOM, PNWU, RVUCOM, TUCOM-CA, TUCOM-NV just to name a few.

Not sure about Western U.

This is reassuring. I have a C- in orgo 2 lab and I hope it doesn't get me auto-rejected. I understand there need to be cutoffs and stuff, but I would hope that an otherwise good application won't get rejected due to a C-.

I think you might have to retake it, but I think your acceptance will hold that you do.

Do many DO schools accept biochem as a replacement for orgo 2? Obviously the ones that require both wouldn't, but the others?

I got an A in biochem. I don't know if my CC offers orgo 2 every semester..

Edit: CC doesn't have Orgo 2 in the spring.. I hope they have it next summer.

Edit 2: Nope, I'm dumb. They only have spring '12 up, not spring '13. Fingers crossed!

I'm not sure, but you might want to tell schools that you intend on retaking the lab if you haven't said it in the future coursework bar or something. Idk, someone want to comment on this.

I didn't retake my C-. Didn't even have to explain it in interviews.

Any school that requires Biochem likely also requires Orgo 2. It wouldn't make sense if they let you replace Biochem with another pre-req...

Shoot. I planned to take Biochem I during the gap year anyway, but that's a bit of an embarrassment on my part. My major only called for the Orgo 2, but Biochem was "optional. recommended"... but the med micro and pharmacology also came recommended 🙂

edit: but I'll take my chances either way. maybe I'm due to make some phone calls.

Biochem isn't a pre-req for those schools is it? I know it is for DMU/KCUMB, but I'm pretty sure the ones you have listed don't require it.

Yup. I emailed every DO school who has sent me a secondary so far and they all said that a C- doesn't result in an automatic reject, but they may (or "will probably" depending on the school) require you to retake before matriculating.

I wouldn't mind retaking it, but my CC doesn't offer orgo 2 lab next semester or in the summer..
