Hey guys I just sent in my application for fall 08

Can I "expect" to get in?

MCAT: P, 6 VR,7 B,9 = 22

Overall GPA: 3.65
Science GPA: 3.81

Very good comittee letter.

I Know people hate the "what are my chances thread", but the SG website says their average MCAT is a 24 and GPA 3.1 but I am seeing other stats floating around the web like a 26 and a 3.4. And I am starting to wonder if SG is that much harder to get into than Ross or AUC.

This might be better answered in the Caribbean medical school forums. Your GPA is excellent, why not just prepare more for the MCAT and take it again?

With your stats, you probably could get into SGU, but why not just retake the MCAT and try applying to US schools (both allopathic and DO)? Sure, SGU is a good school, but you're limiting yourself with regard to choosing a specialty. For instance, certain highly competitive specialties, like derm, ortho, ophtho, or ENT are practically off-limits to Caribbean grads. And if you're applying to other specialties, you've got to work harder than US grads to get in because unfortunately program directors will take US grads into their residencies Caribbean grads. SGU has a great match rate for a Caribbean school, but there are still certain limitations an SGU grad will face compared to a US grad. Now, if you applied to US schools (both MD and DO) at least twice and could not get in both times, SGU is a great option, along with Ross, AUC, and Saba. In all honesty, if you could bring that MCAT up to at least a 29, I think you'd have a pretty good shot at a US allopathic school. Hell, if you bring the MCAT up to a 26, you might have a pretty good shot at a DO school.

You will most likely get into SGU. I would only advise re-taking the MCAT and trying for a U.S. school if you are not too old or can spare a year, otherwise just go caribbean and dont waste unnecessary time.

You will need to get a better MCAT to get into SGU. AUC is almost as selective as SGU. Ross is the easiest of the 3 but kicks out students left and right.

I am really hoping to get into SGU without taking the MCAT again.

While I only have "one" MCAT score I have prepared for it 3 times. The first time was last summer for the August administration and I could only get my Kaplan full length scores up to around a 23-24.

I then prepared for the April test of this year and was scoring 25-27 on AAMC and I decided to take the test, scored a 22 somehow.

I was upset with the 22 and I began preparing for the july 24th test and was scoring 28-30, took the test and felt awful about it and voided the exam.

I am feeling like my preparation for the MCAT is not helping with the real examination, and I would rather spend my time taking more courses that are going to help me in med school (if I can get in with my score).

Also, I feel like many people are scoring in the 30s and still not getting in, and being a white male I dont think I am impressing anyone but myself with a score of 30 even if I can bring it up that high. Basically I dont want to waste any more time studying for this test.

I also think I WILL take the MCAT again before going to Ross or AUC, but I am really pulling for an SGU acceptance.

No matter what color you are you still need to aim for a 30 because I know a black guy who applied to MD twice and didn't get in, but he finally got into a DO school. There are also other factors they look at besides MCAT scores...

Why would he need a better MCAT score? It's only 2 points lower, and his GPA is much higher than the average and supposedly has an overall excellent app (LORs, ECs, etc.) I think he has a good chance of getting in.

You need a better MCAT score, in the high 20's. But with that GPA you might as well apply to a DO school. DOs can get into more competitive residencies than IMGs. I know one student in a residency and he says DOs have an advantage over IMGs.

Other factors, besides GPA and MCAT, have equal weight with the admissions committees. If you did not work or suffer hardship during undergrad, then your stats will be taken at face value.

Either way you have a good chance at SGU, although it all depends on when you apply and what the applicant pool looks like.
