If someone gets a full ride scholarship and said school can see other acceptances, can we push for extra scholarships to cover room and board? Or is a full ride as far as schools will go to attract you? Do schools see your other scholarship offers or just acceptances? How does one go about the negotiating process with scholarships (if there is such a thing). I have a extra mouth to feed so I'm trying to squeeze the best deal if possible. Thanks.

I've definitely heart that scholarship leveraging is a thing. A guy I talked to mentioned that he had a generous scholarship to a public school, which the top 10 private schools he was accepted to matched when he brought it up. I'm not sure what the tactful way of negotiating such things is though, so I'm also curious about how it's done in case I get that opportunity.

Yea. I don't think that any of the schools I was accepted to can top my scholarship. I only want to see if I can squeeze out more from my top choice. I feel like a full ride may be as far as a school is willing to pay tho.

So you got a full ride then? Congrats, where to?

I haven't heard of schools going beyond a full ride unless that's part of the deal originally, e.g. with the Geffen award at UCLA where you get tuition + room/board + books, or something like that.

UTSW. I have some partial rides too but I know I won't attend. I'm trying not to take out any loans if possible.

Nice! Well, something to keep in mind is cost of living is generally reasonable in Texas. I know it's likely a lot less stressful to not deal with loans, but I think borrowing some for living costs would be fine and you'll still likely stay well below the average debt of most med students.

Zurc2014 you have been offered a sweet scholarship, be content!
Oh please don't get me wrong now. I'm content (hell even without the award). I just have a lot of undergraduate debt ($60k) and want to avoid more if at all possible. I'm more than happy as is but curious if I can save more. Plus I'm in my mid 30s so I got a late start as it is. I can pay off 60k during residency but want to minimize my professional loans taken out.

Just call the dean. hat in hand. tell him you cant attend without living expenses covered. It worked for me (a private university with an extremely large endowment, so perhaps more accommodating).

Damn thats scary. What if they're like " well that's all we can do, good luck with your future endeavors" lol

Bruh... you are more than good . I can respect the hustle, but I think that asking the school to also pay your rent may be in poor taste? If you want living expenses covered too, you can always join the military. I think you squeezed everything out of this process, accepted to a great school that you won't even have to pay for. That's 80k+ of tuition and fees . Focus on making it through the next few years and I guarantee that debt will definitely not be an issue.

It sounds like people agree that in the OP's case, she is probably in the best situation possible. I am also confused as to how "full ride" does not cover room/board. I thought "full tuition" is tuition money alone and "full ride" is tuition+room/board.

However, I would also be interested in the more general topic of, how do you have these conversations with schools. If you ask a school to match an offer, does that mean you have to go if they match it? What is the timeline like on these processes (need to wait til April when they have all acceptances out?) If anyone has any stories or experiences here it'd be appreciated.

Word. I got you. Thanks.

I don't think room and board comes with the kind of package they offer. It only covers tuition, books, laptop fee stuff, ect. Basically everything except rent.

Do Texas schools send offers earlier compared to other schools ? Or do people who get scholarship s get those offers with their acceptance?

Can't you just fill out FAFSA and just accept partial aid and use that for room/board?

Make your slacker kid find a job to cover rent. Problem solved. =p

Yeah he should take his young son/daughter to baby gap and see if he can sign them up for modeling to cover their expenses... damn kids need to start taking responsibility for their expenses

My read of these situations is that you are only in a good negotiating position if you are accepted at a better schools than the one you want to deal with. So, Drexel might free ride you if you're in at Yale, but not the reverse.

What if they are the same tier (so its from another fairly competitive school)? I think the other schools rank 25 and 10 respectively while Utsw is 23 or so. I'm not counting DO acceptances of course.

Time to add "world's tiniest violin player" to my EC's
 But I don't want you guys to think I'm complaining. Not in the least bit. I super grateful to even get in and would happily pay full price to go to any US school. I'm just curious if we can get room and board too. If not, it's not a big deal at all. Just curious.
