Getting off the wait list?

Has anyone had any luck getting off a wait list by writing to the program? I know it's common to do with undergraduate programs, but I'm not sure how that stands for graduate programs. It seems like my position is pretty set in stone- they said I'm # x out of so many students. Any thoughts?

I think it depends on how many people they waitlist. Some schools waitlist hundreds of people while others only waitlist 20 or 30. Another thing about waitlists is that you can be accepted up until they day before school starts. So depending on your how many people are on it and where you are on it will really can be the difference.
