Did anybody here get out of medicine? I have been wondering about it off and on. Some of the questions that come up are:

Loans!!!??--What to do about them
Other jobs--could I make money? What kind of job could I possibly get? Could I use my MD knowledge?
Will I feel like I went to med school and jumped through all those hoops for nothing?
Would I be able to enjoy my life in a job I'm not sure I'm made for?

Most people say to wait until after residency to make sure it isn't just the residency process that gets me down. That seems like good advice.

Any comments or stories?

Just some suggestions that may be synergistic with your MD degree:
Get an MBA/MPH and consider hospital administration or
Get a JD and become our enemy

Seriously though, a MD degree doesn't open a lot of doors if you haven't completed a residency. Most respectable hospitals in the US would never hire you on staff if you're just a GP. Also, are you sure you want out of the medical field altogether or just out of pathology? If it's just pathology you dislike, consider reapplying for another specialty.

I agree with the previous poster. You may be in the wrong specialty. Do some exploring. Your limited training will not qualify you for too many things right now.

All the best in your search.

I disagree with the previous two posters. If you truely do not like medicine don't continue. It will only make you more miserable. If your almost done with residency however, I would consider sticking it out. In contrast to what other posters have said, there many many opportunities out there for MD holders. If you are interested in business I suggest you consider management or strategy consulting. I don't know what kind of grades or med school you went to but a few of the more prestigious consulting firms would love to hire MD's. (BCG, McKinsey, Bain, BAH) You can consider wallstreet as well. (Investment banking, equity research) There are even smaller firms run by doctors you might want to look up. (Pineforce comes to mind) Do not get discouraged. Firms know that MD's are intelligent and exceptionaly hard workers. I can help more if you want.

i would also add venture capital to this list. whether you are actually smart, the rest of the world believes you have some type of insight into a very profitable industry. i know a couple of guys who have ditched medicine...one getting an MBA and quiting after completing his MD...the other getting his MBA after completing a residency. There are many places that would take you...although there is little active recruiting because MDs quiting medicine is not the norm...you will have a lot of choices.

I was flying back from an interview and was talking to a guy on the plane. It turned out he knew everything about the match. He was an MD who left medicine.

He was in computers now. He said that whenever he went to job inteviews, he felt his MD brought him two steps above everyone else. He had made big money in the late nineties, of course, but even now he had a well-paying job.

Can we get a sticky for this, and place it seasonally between September and January?
