While working as a volunteer research assistant, how does one get their name on a paper? I don't want to overstep any boundaries, but I want to be as involved in my lab as I can. Thanks!

I would say try to get on an abstract/poster presentation before asking about a paper. This will sure your initial motivation and allow you to "prove" yourself in a way to your mentor. But I don't think you would be overstepping any boundaries, unless you are in your first month, etc.
