Hi everyone!

I'm currently closing off my second year, did pretty poorly in a lot of my classes due to a ****ty medical condition that caused a lot of anxiety and depression (not trying to bring pity or excuse myself) but mostly that's what happened also really ****ty study habits, like really, I had no idea how to adapt to the fast pace of college level organic chemistry and even gen chemistry and other classes- which I'm working on this summer, I'll be attending workshops that'll go over study habits and trying to adapt myself for next year.

I'm trying to find some type of research opportunity this summer but I'm really not sure how to go about this with a low gpa (like, under a 3.0 gpa, yeah I know)

Any thoughts?

thanks!

It's late in the year to start looking for a summer research position, but you might ask your advisor, professors of classes that had a lab component, and friends already affiliated with a lab for some leads. If that doesn't work out, you can scan the publications of some of the professors on campus, find projects that appeal to you, then email them asking if they could use help in their lab this summer (expect about 1 response per 7 queries you send out). Don't overlook psychology, botany, agriculture-related projects, etc.

The previous poster gave a good answer. Also, many universities have an office called the Office of Undergraduate Research (or something analogous). They pride themselves in helping undergrads help themselves.

I have a blog post on undergraduate research (I work in an Office of Undergraduate and Graduate research): doctororbust.wordpress.com/2014/02/08/research-doing-research/

About the grades, get a tutor. I used to tutor orgo and gen chem. A lot of people have issue's they've hidden from others because of shame. There's nothing to be ashamed of, go get a tutor and stick with then so they get to know you. Also, if you're struggling with your grades trying to take rigorous courses in the summer might not be the best strategy.

oh! trust me, I'm not doing that ever again- I did that with gen chem 1 lol 15 weeks of material in 6 was hell. I just meant working on study habits during the summer by doing these workshops. But thank you! I just felt like there was no point because it seems like a lot of professors care about gpa as a marker and although I really screwed up, I really do understand the material- test taking skills are also something I need to work on as well 🙁
