I am undergraduate student that is starting his medical school career in Aug 2010. I have a strong interest in the brain, and consequently, neurosurgery and neurology.

Where should i start, to get ahead of my class in medical school? Is there a popular text book i can purchase now? Also i desire to do neuroscience research. Is there anything I can buy now to prepare me for what techniques i will have to learn? What is the most popular neuroscience journal? Or most popular neuroscience book of clinical cases that would be an interesting read?

As you can see, i am entirely new. Any help would be fantastic.

First of all, let me applaud you on your interest in the brain. The nervous system, being the most complex known system in the universe is certainly worthy of a lifetime of study.

Your goal in medical school should be to test that interest in a variety of ways. You will likely not receive much help in the form of text books, but hands-on experience is the better option.

First I would look up neuroscience professors at your medical school/university. Take a look at their research descriptions and pick a few that interest you. Be advised that it is very difficult to find a mentor in the neurosurg department so I would choose from neurology, psych, and neuroscience (biology). E-mail them and see if you can volunteer/work in their lab.

Other things you can do is to set up some shadowing (most med schools are very happy to oblige) of a neurologist of neurosurgeon. Join an interest group.

Finally, surf the web. Try to find articles discussing medical careers in these specialties. There is a wealth of info online. Sometimes it just takes time to find.

Good luck! :luck:
