Hey Everyone, I hav had 5 surgeries in my childhood, and always admired my anesthesiologist. He made me laugh and relax and gave me the frame of mind that nothing everything was gonna be alright. I always told myself I wanted to be that guy for others, but I wanted to be a mechanical engineer more. So I kept the idea of being an anesthiaologist in the back of my head, but continued to pursue engineering. I have been doing an internship with an Engineering company and realized that I dont want to do this for a living. Im certain that its not something specific like the certain tasks at hand or even the company. So, I really wanna pursue this profession. I even had a dream last week that I was an anesthesiologist (for some wierd reason I drove a segway around the building) .

So I am asking for your people's help. I need an valuable information you are willing to share and even the not so valuable info. Also I have a few specific questions.

Im currently a Senior in highschool and have a 2.8 unweighted gpa, a 790 on the math SAT and havent applied for any colleges. Is it even plausible that I can one day become a certified practitioner in anesthesia with this bad start? Im hoping to do a couple years at a junior college then try applying for a reputable medical school, if that is also plausible?

By the way dont be jealous of my ballin grammar skillz🙄
 
I'll take the first stab at this.

1) You're graduating in a month. Why haven't you applied to any colleges? Although some students are able to parlay 2 yrs at a CC to an undergrad and then med school, this is not the normal course. Your first two years typically include the prereqs for med school and primary topics of the MCAT. You need to be taking them at a 4-yr university. You need to attend a traditional undergrad.

2) Congrats on the math score. Unfortunately, I can only imagine why you didn't post your verbal. Let me remind you that communication is no small part of a physician's profession. Much of the MCAT is reading comprehension. There are two small essays, which don't typically factor into your acceptance, but if you tank them, you will have great difficulties making it to med school

3) You must earn an undergrad degree before entering med school. There are a few programs around the country that allow early entry, but I can tell you right now you won't be eligible.

4) Good news is, you haven't destroyed any chances yet. They won't really care about your high school stats. Just get into a good undergrad, and do well.
 
Ok thanks O got a 690 on the language part by the way. I dont also wouldnt mind doing two-four years at a cc then earn a degree at an undergrad and then go into med school, I got my whole life ahead of me im only 18 now.
 
high school means nothing. If this is what you want to do, bust your butt do well in cc or whereever, finish strong at a state college, volunteer, do research, shadow an anesthesiologist. At this point in your life short of serious criminal activity there arent too many limiting factors.

Start visiting the PreMed forums, or buy this book.

It's been years since most of us have worried about undergrad or med school admissions. Get advice from subforums dedicated to PreMed and Med School, not Anesthesiology.

hey man right now you are in no way disadvantaged compared to anyone else as far as getting into med school goes.. everything depends on how you do in college and on the MCAT (plus random less important ECs, research, etc).

High-school counts for basically nothing, the playing field for getting into med school is level for you and all other HS seniors applying to college.

The pre-allo forum has tons of threads (with good and not so good information) on this topic. If you read through you should be able to sort out what's useful to you.

Basically...

You need 4 years of college. Any major is fine. Pick something you like, that you'll enjoy and do well in. You need to have around a 3.7 GPA during the first three years. There are four pre-med pre=requisite courses that you must take. 1 year each of biology, general chemistry, general physics, and organic chemistry. You need to average around a 3.7 in these classes.

You need to take the MCAT and score 30+. Most people take it the summer between their junior and senior year of college.

It's definitely possible to get in with scores less than above; these are just averages.

Next step is applying to med school.. but you can deal with that later.

I agree with a lot of the above advice. Just one point I would add is that when you look into what undergrads you might want to attend, find out what kind of support services they have for pre-med students. Ideally you will want a college that has some type of pre-med committee. They will advise you during your four years about what you need to be doing (volunteering, classes to take, general advice etc...), they will collect your waived letters of rec. for you and they will write a letter on your behalf to go in your packet. Most school have this type of set-up but some do not. I found it very helpful to me when I applied.

Lol I didnt find this website by searching for "want to be an anesthesiolgist", or something like that but I did specificly search for anesthesia forums because forums are where you can get information from people who know what they are doing. And all of my posts are in this thread because I'm not qualified to try to talk about this forums topic in anywhere but a noob thread like this. I didnt want attention I wanted helpful information
