Any ideas on how this will affect interview yield? Do programs screen for having taken Step 2 score? Any idea what chunk of programs extend interviews before October 1st?

If specialty matters, I'm asking for IM anesthesia.

Thanks in advance

Nobody knows the answers to these questions. It is highly dependent on where you applied and what specialties. Some places it will matter, some it won't. I heard from several people in the class above that they missed out on invites because they didn't have a level 2 score back in time.

Let this be a lesson to every current 3rd year. Schedule your Level 2 boards early and avoid worrying about this

Are you also referring to Comlex 2PE score?

Yes. Have it all in. There is really no reason to delay taking your boards. Get them done in June or July and be done with it

You should be fine taking it and getting results back by the beginning of Oct.

Here is the PD 2018 survey:

Each specialty shows what percentage of interviews were offered at what time during the interview cycle and it shows what percentage of interviews were conducted at what time. For IM (page 50) 20% of interviews are offered prior to Oct. 1st, and 51% are offered in Oct. For Anesthesia (page 15) 23% of interviews are offered prior to Oct. 1st, and 44% are offered in Oct.

There are many reasons...some even strategic and helpful.
I agreed there is a strategic reason to wait for PE till end of aug (so it releases after Oct). But in my case I wanted every interview I can get and it seems like 25% want everything in for a 'complete app.' So thats a risk benefit you have to weigh out. 95% pass PE on first attempt, I think you get the Kauffmann videos and you take it early. That was the most relieving test to pass.

There is no helpful reason why you would delay boards. At some programs you aren't marked "complete" until your step 2 scores are in. If that isn't by Sept 15th then you may not be in the first wave (sometimes only wave) of interview invites. If you believe that is "strategic and helpful" then bless you

The fear of failure mentality is weak AF. If you fail PE you have to retake and pass before match. So you're scrambling last minute to get a spot that will have the result released by Feb 20th or whatever the rank list due date is. Just take your tests, get good scores and move on.

Aren't you making the assumption that in addition to taking them early you scored well enough for it to be of benefit. Is there not a scenario where taking it later gets you a 2nd wave interview because of a target score vs no interview because you took it early and got a **** score?

Note that I did already take and pass. And I agree that having the failure out later can be a real issue. I tell people to take it by July now.

However, I understand why someone would want to wait, as I was in that camp in the past. Its not unreasonable, but the downside is much higher than it was a year or two ago.

That scenario exists. But the scenario also exists where you don't get an interview because you have no score. Fortunately it isn't a binary option. You can take it early and still do well. You can also take it later and do poorly. Take early, do well, profit.
