Hello all,

This may be a ignorant question, but I am going to ask it anyway and I would love to hear any feedback.

So I am applying to medical school next cycle and I am a CA resident (all my family lives here). I would love to stay in CA, but with my stats the chances look slim unless I choose to do DO.

That leaves me with the option of applying to mainly out of state schools.

This leads me to mymain question: if I go to a school out of state, what are the chances of getting a residency spot back in California? I understand its based off of how well you do in medical school, boards, etc. But if I go to a out of state school, does that make it even more difficult to get back into CA?

I am afraid I will go to a out of state school, get an out of state residency, and find many opportunities out of state which will eventually lead to a career away from my family. Being near my family is very important to me, especially since I know I will be busy for a good portion of my life so I want to be able to live as near to them as possible so we can spend the most amount of time together.

So is this a realistic fear? That I will get stuck out of CA?

People from out of state get residencies in California.

However, a lot of it will have to do with your grades, your Step 1 score, and what specialty you ultimately go into. If you go into Urology, for instance, you'd be lucky to match, let along match into a California program. If you go into Family medicine, on the other hand, you'll have a much large number of programs to apply to and will be more likely to land in a California residency slot.

If you go to a school that supports its students well, you may be able to have some pull in some Cali programs, but it's really hard to quantify your chances of landing one with so many variables in the air.

You might be "stuck" attending med school outside of California, and you might match in a state other than Cali for residency as well. If you choose to practice as an attending outside Cali, that will be entirely your own choice; there is nothing about completing residency in another state that will force you to be "stuck" in that state.

If you get into med school outside Cali, you will still be a doctor...and you can still move wherever you want to practice once you are an attending.
