So... with the Jan 29th test coming up... any ppl who are MCAT gurus have any suggestions on getting my verbal score up... 1 point?

I have taken a bunch of AAMC thus far #3-7 and will be taking 8 9 10 and 11 before the test.

On every single on I have scored a 9 on verbal... all got 29/40 correct. Cant seem to get that final question.

I know luck could have it that on the test day I could get that extra one correct.

Anyone have suggestions on what I can do to get one stinking more point on this thing? The scale for verbal is so rough!

I have EK 101 and EK verbal and that is what I used the past few months for practice.

I was in such a situation and I read the Kaplan Strategy and got a 15.. then a 13.. no joke.

You mean mapping? I freaking hate mapping and it just distracts me and takes up time. I have enough trouble focusing on the passage for 8 mins/passage let alone stopping and taking breaks to map?

I really think it helps to write down the main idea. Why the hell did they write this passage, what are they arguing? How are they writing it? Do they argue effectively? Questions you should be thinking about.

Just to ease your concern a little, 9 is not a bad score. You can excel in sciences and still become very competitive in almost every midtiers and upper midtiers.

Just watch out for AAMC 9 verbal because it is horrendous. I got 3 points lower than my average. 😱

AAMC 9 is harder? That's the only one I've taken so far- so I hope that's true. 🙂

mind if i ask what do you usually write down when you map a passage?
I just did AAMC 8 w/o mapping came back down to an 11 on VR.

As for mapping, I limit myself to a sentence of no more than 8 words per paragraph.

Here's what I had to for EK test 6 passage 1 (I have the old book w/ 60 questions a test):

P1: VG more realistic, violence more real, unrealistic characters

P2: Postives; Increased (I used an upward arrow) develpmt motor skills; interaction

P3: Research - positive prediction - abstract thinking

P4: Other media and violence, research unclear about negtive VG.. (okay, this one was weird)

P5: common subject in TV and VG. Positive correlation

P6: Why VG? Goals. Danger & alternate world. Aggression.

I don't map passages that I think are easy..(you could usually tell by the first P)

WOW. FML.

You are totally correct. Just did AAMC 9 and got a freaking 7! Gotta figure out what I did wrong on this. Hopefully the real thing will not be as brutal as that!

have Examcrackers 2002 but does not say in book which edition it is. Title is "Examcrackers-101 Passages in MCAT-Verbal Reasoning." Tan colored book 461 pages. Anyone know if it's uptodate and useful?

Also, I have about 27 other MCAT books like Examcrackers. A set includes "Hyperlearning MCAT." It's all from 2002,2004,2005.Anyone know about all this-useful?trash?

What about "The Official Guide to the MCAT Exam" first edition,400 pages? It's on the MCAT homepage. I called the MCAT phone number and the guy said all the stuff is in that new 400 pg guide. He said it's the first guide put out by MCAT exclusively?Has anyone bought this?

I tried the "verbal reasoning" today in Examcrackers-the practice tests. I am fluent in English. I received an A Honors for a college course. But I only got one answer correct out of the questions asked. For example, there were 7 questions for 1 passage. I read 1 passage and only got 1 correct out of 7. I read another passage and only got 1 correct out of 7. What am I going to do?

Just to add to the AAMC9 VR Hysteria, I scored an 11 on this test, my lowest. My previous two AAMCs I scored 15s on and I also scored two 14s previously. I hope the AAMC 9 VR is an outlier like others are suggesting!
