I am a dependent that will be using the final months of my stepfather's gi bill for my first year of medical school. I've already been told tuition for first semester will be paid in full. I assume I will be getting the housing allowance as well, but could not confirm how much until closer to when school starts. I was wondering if people who used the gi bill for medical school took out any financial aid in addition and could give an idea of how much is reasonable to take? I used two years of the bill for a masters program, was given ~1300/mo for a housing allowance in Oregon, and found myself pretty strapped for cash at times (and I consider myself pretty frugal), particularly during the months when the allowance was prorated. I dont want to build up unnecessary debt, but I also dont want to have to stress about making ends meet while I am in school. What purchases, like a stethoscope and whatnot, should I take into consideration that I will have to make during first year?

I think GI bill will continue the 1300 a month payment for the duration of the year. They will give you a once a semester allowance for books and supplies. Other than that you should make a budget and see if that 1300 is enough. Look into Health services or Oregon specific program. I would not recommend the military schoolarship.

The actual amount paid to you monthly is E5 with dependent BAH pay. If you are still going to be in the same location, the pay should be the same. You can google a BAH calculator and select E5 with dependent(even if you do not have a spouse or children) and enter your zip code. Make sure it is based on 2014 rates.
