Would appreciate if someone could shed some light on lifestyle as a general GI specialist. For those of you in practice:

What are your hours like?
How much control do you have over your hours?
Can you have an 8-5 practice and not be on call or minimal call?
Is it possible to join a practice where you don't do scopes or any procedures and just see patients?
How difficult is it to take a month off for travel/family when you're part of a group vs academic center?

TIA!

You can mostly find a job to fit whatever setup you are looking for. There are GI "hospitalist" week on/week off gigs, employed models, private models, hybrids, etc.

That said, a month off at a time will be hard. And as above, if you dont want to do procedures, it might not be the best field for you.

Consider psychiatry?

I cant take a month off at a time

If taking a month off a/any time is your priority, few fields, assuming you are in IM, will work for you.
Hospitalist and critical care have shift-work gigs and locums more easily arranged than other IM-subs.
Outside IM, ER and Anesthesiology are similarly fortunate to have that lifestyle option.

If you own your practice however, you can do what you want in any specialty.
