GI prep considered clear liquid?

Are GI preps considered clear liquids? Endo patients are supposed to take the prep until midnight and then be NPO after. I recently heard from one of our GI guys that some gastroenterologists are having patients take their prep up to 2 hrs before the procedure, under the argument that the prep would be considered a clear liquid. I know there are number of different preps and I dont know the difference between all of them. But has anyone heard this argument before and what do you make of it?

No they take it on the morning of the procedure too

yes, and our guys are doing divided preps as well, i think for patient comfort

A few of our guys are wanting the AM prep as well. We won't sedate them unless it's been at least four hours since they finished their prep.

I would not move to call GI preps clear liquids. Transparency has nothing to do with it in my opinion. What would the stuff do to the lungs, Lord forbid?

This has been coming up increasingly as GIs are splitting preps. I've just said, "six hours for the MAC split preps" Maybe way too conservative, but I haven't seen a discussion of this split prep in the literature so am leaning to more hours. I'd love to see some literature and feel more comfortable relaxing my arbitrary NPO guidelines. But since my MACs are invariably TIVA GAs with no airway protection, it's hard to reconcile.

A colleague--excellent doc--had a patient aspirate some of the split prep recently ("oh it's a clear liquid, c'mon, c'mon). Pt got shipped to the big house for a couple days. So, there is my pre-emptive response to the chorus-line "I never had a problem."

BTW, is sulfuric acid a clear liquid?

We don't do conscious sedation cases. That's only done without anesthesia personnel. If the GI docs want to do it themselves, they're welcome to do so. If they do it with us, they do it our way or we're not there - simple as that.
