I shadowed a D.O. during the fall, about three or four times. I sent him a nice Christmas basket around the holidays. He also wrote me a recommendation for med school and I got in during late January. I gave him a phone call to thank him again; I was thinkign about sending him something, but its April already. I want to stay in touch with him, do you guys think I should just send him a letter telling him where I'm going to school, and whats going on with me just as an update?

Yeah just send him a letter, don't need to send him any more gifts; sending the basket is more than most people do already. If you really want to send a gift maybe something like a mug with your school's logo on it would be nice.

But seriously, you don't need to send him a gift if you don't want to. And if you do, just do it.

yeah, send him a letter. i think a heartfelt letter of thanks and the effort of keeping in touch will speak more clearly than a gift. a few months is really not that long, either. i doubt he expects you to update him every other week 🙂
