My friend is graduating in a month and he is going into pediatrics with the goal of becoming an oncologist. I wanted to get him a graduation gift consistant with his goals. Anyone know of any books (or other gift) that are about peds oncology, like a book of reflections from kids that survived or somthing like that? ANy other thoughts of a nice gift idea. I would like to spend $20-30 but would spend more if necessary.

Hi - If he is going to a relatively large pediatric program/Children's Hospital they may have various greeting cards or similar type of fund-raising support gifts (tshirts, etc) related to their oncology dept that you could buy for him. If not, why not simply give a small donation in his name to that hospitals "child life" department to be used for toys/games in the heme/onc ward.

Erma Bombeck wrote a book, I Want to Grow Up, I Want to Grow Hair, I Want to go to Boise, about kids surviving cancer. It's a little dated (from the late 80s, I think) but it's quite humorous and gives a good perspective on peds onc from a totally non-medical viewpoint. In paperback I can't imagine it would run more than $6-7.
