I have been shadowing a spinal surgeon twice a week and have had the pleasure of being in the OR with him for 50 hours this semester. I wanted to get and his nice secretary a little thank you gift but have no idea what to get him.

Wondering if I should get him anything related to medicine, Christmas, or something completely off topic?
Just looking for ideas, I appreciate your comments 😀

Starbucks gift card with a personalized note is my favorite (simple + generic). $10 minimum, probably $50 max.

Or find out what his family likes to do and get them some type of thing associated with it.

The more creative and personalized the gift, the less $ you have to spend.

the starbucks giftcard is probably the best idea

a nice bottle of wine is always appropriate

Hmmm.....He can buy a 50k Starbucks gift card...LOL

Yeah...the gift card is great. He will surely appreciate it.

Usually I would say a gift card is good but...this dude is a spinal surgeon. You probably need to buy him a yacht

Can't go wrong with some of this:👍

I second the starbucks gift card

A gift card is probably fine. If you know he likes to take his family to X or perhaps you've been to a small, new restaurant that you think he might like get him a gift card there.

'Though, really, I'm not so sure a gift is "necessary." A thank you note should suffice (better than a card)....

Remember that even though these guys make bank, they realize you are a poor student. They've likely been there before. So I wouldn't discredit a gift card as they realize it's not from their buddy spinal surgeon who is pulling in a teacher's annual salary every month.

I bought a wide-ranging restaurant gift certificate for a physician that I shadowed. It was good at most restaurants in the city and he seemed very happy with it.

In his words, "It was nice to take my wife out to dinner knowing that a grateful student had sent us there."

Sure he can buy it himself, but maybe the good doctor's family rarely gets out together.

re: dale jarrett racing adventure gift certificate

However, for the ultimate NASCAR gift for Father’s Day or Christmas, I would highly suggest you look into a NASCAR racing school. NASCAR racing schools provide in a class room teaching and on track time learning, driving, and racing. Control your own racecar; control your own roller coaster, for up to 20 or 30 laps. You can feel exactly what it feels like to drive a real NASCAR racecar at speed over 150 mph. There are many options for NASCAR racing schools, ranging from the Richard Petty driving experience, the NASCAR driving experience and Dale Jarrett’s racing adventure.

I got this for me and my son nascar gift certificate

That's sweet! Family time is precious for physicians, and having a gift card is the perfect excuse to go out. 🙂

I always did a thank you note to the physician. If they allowed me spend a lot of time with them I would go out and buy a big orchid plant for their office! (I think I did this twice?)

These are my standard thank-you gifts, depending on the recipient. Although I don't drink wine or coffee, lots of people do.

I only give wine if I suspect the person likes wine. If you want to give a bottle of wine, I suggest you find a local wine store (where they sell ONLY wine). Decide before you go in what your price range will be. There are bottles that are perfectly acceptable as gifts in the $15-20 dollar range, but if you want to spend more that's cool too.

Go in, tell the person you're looking for a gift. Tell them your price range and ask them to make a recommendation. Pay attention to the stuff that they tell you; this is what you're going to repeat when you give the bottle. Since I live in Oregon, I always pick an Oregon wine and I tell the recipient something about the region of Oregon where the wine was produced.

One of the best thank you gifts I've herd of was one a friend gave an anesthesiologist he was shadowing. Over the course of a few weeks he found out the guy loved making pizza with fresh tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, so the gift was several homegrown heirloom tomatoes, a package of high quality fresh mozzarella, and some home grown basil. Along with a nice letter of thanks.

Whatever it is make it thoughtful and tailor it to the individual's interests.

Heirloom as in they were passed down generations? Those must have made an interesting pizza...

Lulz! Heirloom tomatoes are varieties that are non-standard. The kinds that don't ship well, look odd, are purple, black, yellow, orange, funny shaped etc. They are usually full of favor, and super awesome.

A thank you card should be adequate.

I got the doctor I shadowed (also a family friend) a gift certificate to a really nice restaurant in the area she lives in. I don't think she and her husband have time to go out to nice places a lot, so I thought it would be a nice thing to treat them.
