Hi,

I got accepted to Glasgow Vet school! Was wondering if anyone knew anything about university accommodation and where students can live 🙂!

Thanks!

First off, congrats on the acceptance!! 🙂 @selisona or @shortnsweet might be able to help you out? I went on a tour during my interview last November, and I remember that there's one student hall (Wolfson) that is directly by the vet school. The other uni student halls are scattered, but most have fairly easy transport links to the vet school. Be aware that there will be younger students living in those halls with you though, and wolfson is a self-catered hall.

There's a few threads about UK students with a few comments on it about glasgow that you may want to check out (use the search feature to find them, but I'll link you to the one from this years applicants):

Also if you're looking for non campus housing, I used http://www.spareroom.co.uk/ last year to find a room to sublet in london, not sure if it's as useful for glasgow but may wanna try it. It's worth it to pay the early bird fee when you're hunting, the good rooms tend to get snapped up very quickly. And it's better to flathunt when you're actually there, so you can go see the rooms and stuff. If you're just moving to Glasgow from the US though, I wouldn't necessarily recommend living out of halls unless you're flying there early. Can be a bit of a hassle trying to sort out outside accommodation since some agencies won't let students lease out a house for a year unless you have a UK guarantor - and if you don't, you have to pay 6 months rent up front. But you might be able to find a flat that is just letting out one room and manage to get in that way. Anyways, thats based off of my experiences in London, I'm not really knowledgeable on Glasgow in particular, so I'd definitely ask one of the other current students on the boards. 🙂

Well hello. Happy to be of service.

I do not recommend living in a hall. Just....no. They are overpriced and not ideal for mature students.

There should be a ton of e-mails going out over the summer/now about upperclassmen looking to rent out their flats or share with incoming first years. Plus, living with upperclassmen helps you get a foot in the door early. Or you can contact some other first years on here or through Joyce and find a place in the West End/Anniesland to live together. Gumtree is a good place to start after that. I don't think i've heard of any Americans having trouble finding flats.

If you come a week or two early, you can always stay in an extended stay place and search for flats then.

Thanks everyone 🙂 Yea...I would rather not live on residence but I don't think I have a choice. I will be applying for Wolfson Hall and hopefully get a place. I have been searching for places near Anniesland and found some pretty nice flats. However, they are mostly two bedroom apartments 🙁 I don't know anyone else who is going!

I really don't recommend it. You'd be paying less for a two person flat than at Wolfson. Just e-mail Joyce and ask her if anyone is looking for a roomie.

I'm going to Glasgow this fall, too! I will be living in a flat with an upper classman. I found it, because it was one of the emails Jill sent out. I had tried a few other emails she sent out, but was too late. What I came to find out is, you have to email the upper classman as soon as you see the email. At least tell them your interested and then go from there. They seem to get snatched up quickly. Good Luck finding a place.

Yes, I know. I emailed all the people that Jill sent out, but all of them are taken =( Jill hasn't been emailing anymore out! I don't know how else to contact upper classmates!

Try joining the GUVMA Facebook page and posting. Or join your own class page and see if anyone wants a flatmate. Or have Joyce/Jill send out an e-mail on your behalf. There are definitely places still being advertised.

Thanks guys! Is the GUVMA facebook page the Rodeo 2014 one? (https://www.facebook.com/GUVMArodeo2014). I can't find any other ones on my facebook page.
I have found decent one-bedroom apartments near Anniesland. Do you guys recommend any area near here in general?
The places I've been seeing are near Bearson Street and Linden Street. For example:

http://www.citylets.co.uk/property-rent/anniesland-bearsden-road-g13-345226/

But you would need to take the railway there I assume?

Do you guys have any other recommendations? How are these areas?

Plus we actually don't have a facebook page for our year! I thought the school would set one up but I think the ones in the past have been set up by the students themselves! I tried adding myself into previous years (Glasgow vet 2017/2018) but haven't got any response 🙁

We actually do have a couple started for our class. The one that is being used the most is Glasgow Vets 2019. If you can't find it, PM me and I will help you join!

Ok, I must be blind! I just added myself to it! THANKS!

The main GUVMA page should be found under glasgow university veterinary medical association....my guess is you can probably find it through the Rodeo page (Rodeo is our annual charity event).

Anniesland is definitely a good place to be. You would be within walking distance of school at either of those two places you listed. I lived in the West End my first 4 years and took the bus up. Others live in Partick and take the train in.
