Glassdoor, the iconic job-hunting website, has been bought for $1.2 billion

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Why is this bad news?
Going forward fewer choices possibly for job seekers and possibly higher costs for employers and job seekers just like Microsoft is doing with LinkedIn. But more importantly, IMO, as a job seeker on Indeed, now Glassdoor, and previously Simply Hired before Indeed acquired them, is all now in the database of the 3rd largest staffing company in the world, Recruit. Recruit owns Indeed, acquired Simply Hired and folded them into Indeed then dissolved them, and now owns Glassdoor. All of that data, contact info, resumes, etc. on applicants and employers now resides inside of Recruit.

Is there not a Student JobBoards Network where this would be more relevant?

Sorry, did I post this in the wrong place? I'm aware of many job boards but this info is not specific to just students. Thx!!

I still don't get why this is bad news? Most employers are either going to advertise everywhere, or they will advertise with the biggest job board. I mean, I suppose if someone wanted to get a job working for Glassdoor, this would be bad news. But since Glassdoor really has nothing to do with pharmacy, I can't imagine too many pharmacists are looking for jobs there. For pharmacists looking for jobs, the same number of jobs (or lack of jobs) exist, and pharmacists looking for those jobs should still be able to find them on Glassdoor.

Without knowing your professional background it's difficult for me to judge your comments so I won't. All I can tell you is that I have been in the pharmacy employment world for 30+ years, the last 25+ directly in the job board business. Here is what my experience tells me. Most employers do not advertise everywhere, nor do they advertise with just the biggest job boards, there are valid reasons for both. Using just the keyword "pharmacy" on Glassdoor yielded 39,428 jobs. Keyword "pharmacist" yielded 10,664 jobs so there are definitely jobs for pharmacists there.

Here is why I feel you should be concerned about Indeed's acquisition of Glassdoor. 1. Less choice, and possibly higher costs for both employers and job seekers, just like Microsoft is doing after acquiring LinkedIn. But more importantly, IMO, as an employer or job seeker posting on Indeed, now Glassdoor, and previously Simply Hired before Indeed acquired them, all of that acquired data is now in the database of the 3rd largest staffing company in the world, Recruit Holdings. Recruit owns Indeed, acquired Simply Hired and folded them into Indeed then dissolved them, and now owns Glassdoor. All of that data on job seekers (resumes, email addresses, phone #'s, etc.) and employers now resides inside of Recruit. There are many employers who don't work with staffing agencies and given the lack of jobs for Pharmacists today, and it's only going to get worse, do you really need any more barriers to entry to the job market?

I don't know anyone that searches for jobs on Glassdoor. Everyone I know that uses Glassdoor, uses it like Yelp - they only go there to read real reviews on companies from former & current employers. As long as the company that purchased them doesn't censor negative reviews, or allow employers to pay to have them removed, I don't think this is a big deal.

I know Pharmacists who are using Glassdoor to look for jobs. Please see my response above for the couple of keyword searches I did on Glassdoor for "pharmacy" and "pharmacist" jobs, there are many there. I'm also concerned about the M&A activity and the consolidation in the marketplace whether it's job boards, insurance companies, hospitals, or community pharmacies. Re censoring, for the last 8 years I have been a prolific poster on discussion threads on Indeed. Just this week Indeed is now censoring me and blocking my comments and responses to other members posts.
