Glasses in med school

This may seem like a stupid and trivial question, but can one manage wearing glasses in med school? over the years my eyesight has gotten progressively worse, but I've only ever used glasses (which I generally only wear when I need to see distances, as I'm near-sighted) - I've never used contacts as I've never had the need to. Would there be any situations in med school where a person HAS to use contacts? If so, I should probably get them and get used to them now...

No. Do you think all doctors in the years before contact lenses had 20/20 vision? In fact, most people that wear contacts all the time find they wear glasses more frequently than before since you don't want to be stuck with contacts in during an overnight call. Plus whenever doing a procedure or in surgery you should always have eye protection.

1)Glasses very often "fit in" in the medical arena, (makes ya look studious and ambitious) [Im talking of glasses for work/school NOT social/party glasses]-Dont fall in that trap..

2)The only time you might want to use contacts would be in the "opposite situation"..-Which would be in social situations and there probably will be few of these..

3) Glasses may protect you from body fluids!! (Vanity wont help here)

4)In some of Sylvester Stallones movies he wears glasses..They are really no big deal..😉

um, yeah, I have, and I know many doctors wear glasses, I just didn't know if there were any particular situations where med school was different, especially with all the new technology used in clinical years

First, if someone tells you anything like "doctors don't wear glasses," I don't know from which planet that person comes from. That's the most ridiculously random rumor I've ever heard about medicine.

Second, your vision should stabilize after 18ish. If you keep becoming more and more near-sighted, I recommend seeing an ophthalmologist.

LASIK does have risks, just like all medical procedures.

Eye glasses do protect you from fluid spills. They aren't as good as goggles, but it's way better than wearing nothing.

Lastly, glasses are good because they make you look old. You don't want to look too much like a kid when going into the clinical world.

sounds like an excuse for LASIK. i'd get them though, they are cheaper than glasses and contacts in the long run, assuming you break a few glasses/upgrade

I use both contacts and glasses. Pretty much always wore contacts before med school because of sports during undergrad...... but in the past two years my eyes have gotten a little worse and it's a little easier on my eyes to read with glasses.

IMHO, this is huge. You can avoid having to use some of those awful masks with eye-shields if you already have glasses. And the first time you get spit at by an irate Hep C patient you will thank your lucky stars that you are wearing glasses.

I think the only time it might be a problem is if you're in the OR because they fog up. But the goggles we wear fog up too, so it won't matter anyway.

If you get the mask closed around your nose well, or use some tape to create a seal they don't fog.

Yeah I had to wear tape every day on surgery or else I couldn't see anything. Left this sticky residue on my nose which really sucked...

i was considering lasik, as a couple of people have 20/15 after their lasik... anyone has had lasik and know how much it cost?... and does it mean that ur vision wont change ever again?

Well you should take your glasses off when using an ophthalmoscope, but you can't see anything without the extremely expensive pan optic plus a dilated pupil anyway.

Definitely not. I know several people who got lasik, which worked for a while, but now they have glasses again.

Glasses are a relatively new invention, so I have no idea how all the doctors with glasses would have made it years ago with bottle glasses nonetheless.

I'm not sure if this is true in class labs, but in other labs I thought you can't wear contacts because they can act as a membrane and concentrate volatile compounds in your eye.

Yeah you shouldn't wear contacts because the formalin will burn your eyes. It's bad enough as it is.
