What blood sugar is appropriate. From my reading I believe that less than 180 is appropriate. Our protocol tries to achieve tighter control.

Once 160 we do.

(BG-60)(.03) if not on any Rx

(.04) if on oral med
(.05) if insulin dependent

Gives bolus and start gtt value.

I give 10 units bolus every time the blood gas on CPB comes back until the trend is downward then I watch it. We don't use glucose in the cardioplegia so that's frequently all that's needed. It seems the earlier you treat it the easier it is to treat. Once we hit 150 I'll start bolusing.
