Been a retail pharmacist manager for 10 years and completely burnt out. I dread going to work everyday and hate bringing work stress home to my wife. I am looking for a way out. I really like accounting and had dreams of becoming a CPA before I chose pharmacy. But this will require at least 3 to 4 more years. Is is worth it? I have student loans and mortgage to pay, so will have to do online or long distance. I'm also considering starting my own business as an alternative (opening gas station, vendor machines or restaurant). Which is the better option to escape from pharmacy?

I think you already know the answer. ANYTHING that gets you out of pharmacy is worth it.....especially if you're not close to retirement. How many more years of that kind of torment can you take?

Accounting degree should be easy, you can take half the courses at community college then transfer to state college, can probably do online now. But starting pay is low compared to pharmacy and you'll have to work your way up. The CPA exams are no joke though, I know many people who failed. It's not like the NAPLEX where 90% pass on first try.

Restaurants are obviously risky. A franchise is less risky but less profit. Vending machines are more passive income which you can do right now. I've been thinking of opening a 7 Eleven, it's one of the best value franchises out there but you obviously become a target for robberies just like pharmacy.

A coding bootcamp could be potentially worth it with the relatively small investment cost. Spend 4 months and $10k or so and you could land a job earning $55-100k.

Either that or quit your job or transfer to becoming a floater so that you don't have to deal with the stress of being a manager.

New grads reading this thread: Stick to the 10 year payoff schedule!

I've never seen so many threads in a profession discussing about how to get out of their current profession. That should be eye opening to future students.

Seriously, pharmD + comp sci degree, pharmD + MBA, pharmD + law degree. People wanna be in school forever and accumulate a million in debt?

Why would you go from one grind to another (opening a gas station). I know one friend whos doing this and another who's running a 7-eleven (they seem more stress the f out then I was at the time). They're not pharmacists tho. Also, depending on your age and family situation, going back to school might be tough. If your wife and kids are well off then it's a no brainer; go do what you enjoy (CPA).

It makes zero sense to go back to school once you graduate from pharmacy school. You've got a terminal degree. You don't need any more of them.

If you want to get out of the field you might have to take some additional coursework.

more like a terminal career path, kek

Those two are so vastly different. Anyhow. I did both at the same time, got a masters degree while working on my startup. It's been torture, super difficult, but worth it.
