goals for 08?

tis that time again...

in 08, I want to
1. kill the mcat
2. get an awesome clinical job
3. have a successful reapp season and
4. Get accepted!!

(and, of course, have some fun along the way...)

Here is what I will do in 2008.

1. Achieve 10 VR consistently on practice MCAT.
2. Obtain 14s on both Biological and Physical sections.
3. Retake MCAT a sixth time in April.
4. Start volunteering in late April.
5. School research in May.
6. Apply in June.
7. Get accepted to a medical school in September.

well im not applying until June 2009...but as yet the plan is in place LOL

1. taking the WHOLE year to study for Mcats
2. Being volunteering at a Teaching Hospital
3. Apply and hopefully get accepted to a clinical experience in S. Africa
4. Take the remaining of my science prereqs..hopefully in the 4.0 range
5. Maybe train for the LV marathon this year..MAYBE lol
6. Maybe make a couple campus visits...that's a BIG MayBe

Have you thought about Osteopathic schools? you would be a shoe in with that GPA... BTW good job on such a high GPA, good luck next year on the MCAT.

My goal,

1. Gain 20-30 lbs before medical school starts

2. Take time to enjoy life before school starts, instead of working 40-50 hour work weeks 🙁

Lol i'll give you my 20-30 pounds! Ive lost 23 thus far and have another 15 to go to get down where I want to be!

So my goals:
--Finish teaching myself physics for the MCAT in April
--Lose the last 15 pounds that I want to; get past the 200 lb chest press mark I'm at.
--Score > 30 on the April MCAT
--Apply in June to instate schools
--Get accepted to one or both!

A lot of these plans sound good.

Couple of points - make sure to apply early. Part of this comes from the "rolling admissions" idea. Part of this comes from my direct experience that, as you are all probably applying to many schools, eventually something will go wrong - AMCAS doesn't verify quickly, late LOR letter, that sort of thing. Applying early will give you breathing room for inevitable snags.

2nd point - Make sure these plans are attainable. Many of you will have a lot going on. Can you do all of it? Be honest. If you can't, is there something you can drop without:

- looking bad (proposed letter-writer gets P.O.'ed because you have to break a obligation)
- missing out on a good opportunity (have to drop a productive and lucrative research job)
- you hamstring yourself (don't have enough time to apply to as many schools as you need to in order to give yourself a shot at getting in).

Don't take on so much that you cannot accomplish your goal of getting an acceptance. If you have family obligations (you are a father, etc.), those come first.

Build into your plans specific break-points where you can step back and re-evaluate your progress. "I think I'm getting too stressed out at date such and such, I know I can drop this obligation without losing anything."

Just quickly glanced over your MDApps - I'd also recommend applying widely and broadly, unless you're limited to certain locations for a particular reason?
