Going outside the match for midyear residency start

I'm going to be graduating (finishing all my requirement and degree conferral) in Oct 2019 due to a LOA (for a medical reason).

Some old school doctors I know mentioned in their day they were able to go "outside the match" and start at programs midyear. Is that a thing (for psych)?. I'm not going to bank on it by any means but it would be interesting if this were even a possibility.

It is possible and "legal". If a program has an unexpected opening, there are specific cutoff dates for the program to be able to do this and still remain in the match.
