Hey SDNers,

Anyone want to go over an NBME exam together? I mean compare answers so we only have to look up the ones where our answers disagree (This assumes you already have a pretty good handle on things). I've already done and reviewed NBME form 1 but I'll do any of the others.

how did u review your answers??? Theres a link to that?

Hi, possibly a silly question: Do you do the NBME exams online at home or is it something you actually do at the prometric center?

Thanks.

So at my school, 3-4 people got together and took the test. Then they compared answers and looked up the ones where people disagreed in Robbins. Went much faster than doing it alone. I'm away from school right now and most of my classmates have already taken it - its getting toward the end.

Its not silly confused me too. There are 4 online exams you pay for called the "NBME" exams. Then there is a separate question set (I think called released items) that you can either do online or do at the practice center.

You can take the test in untimed mode and write down the questions and possible answers, and then look up the real answers. Effectively you can grade your own test and see what it correlates to, scorewise.

Idiopathic, done alone, that would take forever unless you assume that you KNOW what you got right and wrong before looking them up.

I think the idea is a great idea; if we can get a bunch of people to just type their answers into an excel spreadsheet, then whenever there is a disagreement on one of the answers, you know to go look it up.... we could actually develop an answer "key".

How about we start with NBME 3?

disclaimer: don't know if that is allowed by NBME, however...

NBME 3 Sounds good. How about doing it tomorrow (Sunday) and comparing answers? I think the more people the better.

Sounds good BDylan.

A quick plug for NBME: The most realistic questions. I think doing them and reviewing them is fun (compared to Qbank) because there's less minutae and when I look something up I think its more worth knowing (might just be me...)

i don't know if this has been posted elsewhere, or if its common knowledge (i just found out)
on the kaptest qbank website there's a link for full explanations for the nbme 1 (the free one) "Explanations to Released Items for Step 1"

obviously you have to have qbank access... 🙂

Those aren't NBME 1, those are the 150 free questions. NBME 1 is $45, consists of 200 different questions, and there are no answers or explanations available.

Anybody do form 3 today? I did it this morning and was kind of disappointed with my score. I didn't think it was that bad while I was taking it but my score was around average. My breakdown was also quite different than form 1's breakdown and didn't really reflect what I have been studying, i.e. I did worse in CVS although I hadn't studied it the first time I took the NBME and had studied it the second time. What did you guys think?

I got an ok score as well.

Here are my answers for the 1st set -- UNCORRECTED

It would be great if we all could go over the answers together and maybe give some explanation for the answer to the hard ones?

Thanks

I took form 3 today as well. Here's where our answers differ:

14. F - I went with NK cells b/c they'll kill cells if those cells aren't expressing any MHC I (which is how they described this lady's cancer cells)

17. C - A person training at high altitudes would have an oxygen dissociation curve shifted to the right (ie, increased 2,3DPG)

27. A - My understanding is that if a kid's bones are still growing, you'll still be able to see the epiphyseal plate; thus, completed growth = no epiphyseal plate.

33. B - Dude's got RHF which is causing blood to back up and leak into his peritoneal space due to increased capillary hydrostatic pressure.

38. D - It's a tubular adenoma. Do a google images search of villous vs tubular.

44. A - Having a cryptorchid testes increases the risk of germ cell tumor.

49. C - Terazosin is an alpha-1 blocker. Alpha-1 receptors are Gq receptors. Thus, blocking alpha-1 will decrease IP3.

That's my take, anyway. Could be wrong.

4. Action potential d/t differneces in membrane conductances
7. Different size breast question. I was so confused. This was screaming behavioarl science so I went with A--reassurance--but one breast 2x the other does seem a bit much. Wouldn't estrogen make the problem worse? I was debating between progesterone so that menarche could be induced...?
27. A growth plates disappear

I agree that number 4 should be difference in membrane ionic conductances. The increased conductance of Na is what causes the action potential. For the tanner breast development question, I put A, reassurance, because aren't you supposed to wait until age 16 before doing anything? It might even out within the next several years anyway.
