Going rates

I’ve been looking at some locums gigs and offers have been around 250-300/hr. Mostly Midwest though. I imagine SE would be similar or a little less depending on how rural were talking

That’s pretty terrible for locum. Permanent gigs are ~$240/h in my area, major metro mountain west. Similar or more in Phoenix and Tucson. If willing to go less desirable area, there’s job I know of in WY that’s paying close to $300/h permanent W2.

It’s just tough because I can’t really relocate right now so am geographically limited. It’s weird that the locums market was on fire a year ago and now dry as a bone. Lots of the locums companies aren’t even placing crit care currently.

The local hospitals I’ve reached out to either aren’t hiring at all, or aren’t hiring someone who’s EM-crit rather than IM.

Locum has cooled a bit but sub 300 rates are terrible, given what permanent jobs are paying. This is W2 in house, for $300/h with guaranteed hours every month.

I got that text today and sounds intriguing.

That’s my “semi retirement” plan, 7-10 days a month after kids finish school and live abroad ( back home) until 60. No nights 🤣

Jumping on the thread, does anyone know how are the rates in Colorado? Is it fairly doable to find a job there, or saturated and may not have opportunities?

I appreciate any thoughts

The one position I spoke to in northern Colorado was offering $200/hr as a 1099, but they were only looking for nights at the time.

Damm, that is pretty bad. No w2 options when you were looking?
Not that I was able to actually get someone on the phone to talk to.

I spoke with a recruiter for Sound today actually - she said their travel team is full, and they’re over 95% staffed nationwide so only had a handful of W2 positions available for the entire country. Legit only one open position with sound within an 8 hour driving distance of where I’m located. It was W2 $230/hr, days, 20-25 patients per day.

Which is kind of a crazy sea change from even just 1-2 years ago.

Maybe that USACS travel team position that was posted above is the move. I spoke with 2 locums companies yesterday and both said their sites are all full and they dont have any hours available to offer so aren’t taking new hires for locums.

There are plenty of good opportunities if one is willing to move. @the Knife & Gun Club’s issue seems to be their geographical limitation. I would not put too much weight into anything being said by a corporate recruiter. I am personally aware of Sound losing all of its prior critical care sites in their Arizona market as their contracted hospitals moved to in-house employment of their intensivists. HCA is heading the same way, and direct hospital employment seems to be the market trend. Perhaps these CMGs don’t have opportunities because they are losing market share, which IMO is great for the specialty as a whole.

Another opportunity in a top 10 metro. Number of shifts for full time is not specified so unclear what the hourly W2 rate is but the 1099 rate is not bad. Its on DocCafe if anyone is interested.

Regarding OP's initial question, I would look to be in the 250/h range, or more if the location is "less desirable".

I feel like that’s low

Do you guys find positions in the usual websites, like DocCafe, Practice Link, etc? Just wondering if there is a specific one for critical care, like there is for anesthesia.

Front range is generally pretty bad for most positions FWIW, not just critical care. Denver metro pays as little as $180/hr or less for ICU for some very busy sites and attendings I've spoken to who were previously in CO even in the mid 2010s said it wasn't good even then. Unfortunately it's a "highly desirable" location and therefore pay is terrible. Pay per hour and for adjusted COL is actually worse than NYC in some surveys (see Doximity 2024 Physician Compensation Report).

NoCo (and maybe CO in general?) was apparently good if you joined a group in the 2000s, but after that it's been significantly downhill per people I know. The main way to find a "good" position these days, as CCM-MD has pointed out, is to be geographically flexible.

What are "good" standard rates for ICU? Should i pick up ICU locums instead of anesthesia? I'm already guessing the answer is no but interested nonethleless
