Going to be Homeless? Where do I go from here?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Didnt read anything but title

Answer: squat. Theres plenty of livable housing abandoned or bank owned (which i dont believe in, as property rights should still be the rights of men/women only)

The bus is cheap as hell, so go to the library, look up somewhere with temperate whether and a load of turned over foreclosures or unsold housing from the bubble.

You get cool points in my book for doing it even if you dont need to

Living with no water or electricity under the constant threat of being forcibly evicted and losing all your stuff? Granted there are plenty of people the world over who live like that, but it's no way to live while going to college.

+1 Seems like the smartest choice.

I don't really get OP's situation. Is this a temporary thing (drawn out fight) or a permanent thing?

Like in 2 days would he just walk back to his own house.

If he was working for all that time for his fathers company and not getting paid, why not just take them to court for your income which was never paid?

If it was under the table type payment where you're paid in cash--unlikely the court will accept such a case.

Hopefully you can get through this struggle.

I can't believe no one's asked this yet: are you a girl?

I know this may sound drastic, but I took out student loans to pay my own way through college.

Whoa. That's gnarly.

OP- We're all rooting for you, man. I wish there was something I could do to help. I think the advice in this thread is great. Good luck to you!

Damn, OP is a fighter. I have nothing to contribute other than to offer my wishes of good fortune.
To be honest, I am a guy who is soft and sensitive. What kid, let alone a son can be afraid of his parents (specifically their actions) for the last 20 years. Even though homelessness was the easier route, I chose to stay for many years. I probably would not have left, if they did not kick me out. I guess when I realized that I wanted to live my dreams so bad that I will pay anything for, it sealed the deal. When my parents stood between me and my dreams, I just pushed harder and pretty much got kicked out. I guess I have something to thank my parents for once I become a doctor. Just to be clear, I do not hate my parents. They are just troubled and incapable of functioning normally, I suspect. We had a hard time starting, and my parents did take care of me. They weren't that happy about I presume, but they did pay a huge price just to keep me. Maybe they thought I was not worth it anymore? Either way, I think the reason why I am fighting because a lot people went through a lot worst. Many people do not even have the same chances and opportunities I have, even though I am in this position. Most importantly, I finally figured out that dreaming was not enough. Now it is the time to make some memories.

I don't think OP's trolling because similar relationship with parents, except w/ stepparent and not both parents. just haven't been kicked out, but have definitely considered the possibility. With that said, if you happen to be in norcal, I might be able to help find resources.

Hi Guys:
Just wanted to update you on the situation. I found a shelter who gave me a place to stay in exchange of watching the premises for 4 hours until someone takes over my shift. However they told me that I got to move out, once I get on my feet. Which you do not have to worry about because they said that they will find cheap housing until then. However if not, I can always refer back to this thread and hopefully people in need do too. Thank you for all the replies, really do appreciate it. I cannot believe that after a day I found a place I can stay safely. Thought I would be sleeping on benches for awhile and also there are a lot of financial assistance available that I had no idea about. As of now I really do think I will be fine, if not better. Never knew that an online community can be this supportive. I was usually a solitary kid, who happen to be the only one supporting myself. I was reluctant to post my problem, however I am sure glad I did. I think my circumstances would have been way different and I have all of you to thank.

We are very happy for you man. Keep us updated on the situation and let us know if there is anything we can help with. Seriously rooting for you man!

It would be pretty ****ty if a forum full of future 'compassionate doctors' didn't try to help you out.

I'm happy to hear that things are looking up for you. Keep us updated 🙂

👍

Right now might be a good time to research reduced cost housing programs (ex. public housing, housing vouchers that pay x% of your rent, etc.), and other programs that might have a prioritized waiting list. A lot of people will experience homelessness, etc. and never realize that all this is out there (while they are priority #1), or find out after the fact.

Turning back on the water isnt the hardest thing to do and squattings a place to crash. You go to class, library, friends in between. And what world are you living in where law encorcement has the time to check the many bank owned and abandoned houses in our country? Let alone would care as long as a kid kept it quiet and clean. My parents are being foreclosed on, the banks taken almost a year to even get things started. Clean quiet squatters are off their radar.

I'd take a squatting adventure over a shelter anyday of the week, safer and cheaper too as shelters even charge daily rates for longer term stays. No gusto in medical students

Law enforcement won't routinely check on foreclosed houses, but those houses are all up for sale. How do you expect to stay there when buyers and their realtors are going through the house looking to buy? They will tell the seller's broker, who will talk to the property management company, who will have you thrown out before you decide to start ripping out the copper wiring and pipes for scrap metal. You aren't just squatting, you are trespassing. When you get caught, do you really want to have to put that on your med school application?

Most home shopping occurs online, very few homes are being regular shown by realtors and beyond that we are still in a major slump with alot of inventory in many markets

But sure it carries some risk, it would be a pretty cold hearted cop who jails u after catching u once for just sleeping in a place and didnt mess it up. Not like hes throwing raves at the house. And the money you save on rent you can put $600 away for any half ass lawyer to talk down trespassing to an ordinance violation which wouldnt affect a medical application.

I'm throwing out options, and sure creative ones with a risk. If more docs didnt follow the motto "success is obedience to a structured way of life" medicine would be much further along as a clinical and scientific field. Thank you opivy

You didn't mention your province which seems necessary to find the right social programs. I did some googleing because I suspect you could get some kind of income (or welfare) from the government until you're back on your feet. I know that most people don't want to be on welfare, but the purpose of these programs, I think, is to keep situations like yours from getting worse.

I'm glad you (the OP) found shelter so quickly. Its very character building to go through this, and I promise you that you'll come out of this better for having gone through it.
