Hi everyone,
i am going to be interviewing at mayo in a few weeks...coming from boston. so far, the flights that i have found to rochester have been heartbreaking...2/3 layovers, 500 bucks plus...total travel time of 9-10 hours. Does anyone recommend a more "direct" way or cheaper way to get there (perhaps fly into another city like minnesota and drive?). or maybe even chicago...much shorter/cheaper flights but very long drive?

any input appreciated. thanks!

Try to get a flight to Minneapolis, rent a car, 40/day unlimited mileage, and find a cheap place to stay arround Rochester. Probably you will have to stay at the hotel 2 nights because you will not be able to get to the airport for your return flight.
Good luck.

I agree - don't bother flying into Rochester. I just did a quick search on Travelocity.com, and Minneapolis-Rochester roundtrip cost $230! That's ridiculous considering you can go by road in two hours or less. When I was at Mayo for a summer program we had a trip to eat in Minneapolis and go to the Mall of America, and we left Rochester around 4PM. You have to go through tons of farmland, but it's not that far. 🙂

btw, I just searched Boston-Minneapolis and was given a fare of $224 (for how many times the distance? Go figure). 😛 Anyway, that would definitely be my suggestion since Chicago probably won't be worth the much longer drive.

Enjoy your interview, Mayo's awesome!

If you interview in the middle of the week, the plane tickets would be more expensive of course than if you fly there over the weekend... but I've searched through http://www.orbitz.com , flight in the middle of the week would cost around $300 with 1 stop... over weekend costs like $200-250. Drive from Minneapolis! When you'll be able to get out of the freeway mase in Minneapolis, Route 52 will take you to Rochester within 1.5 hours.
Good luck on the interview!

thanks everyone for the help. i think i will definitely fly into Minneapolis then drive from there. i'll post my experiences on interviewfeedback when i return. thanks again

Cheaper than renting is van service from MSP..Rochester Direct and a couple others will take you there for $30 or so. Run almost every hour

i'm going to be interviewing at mayo as well in a couple of weeks. i bought my plane tickets for minneapolis airport. Jane (adcomm) told me there is a shuttle you can take from the airport to campus. it takes about 1.5 hours and she said they might have some sort of discount if you mention that you are going to mayo for an interview. also, there is student hosting so i'd try to do that rather then spend on a hotel. i'm sure we can all agree that this process is costly enough already!

Hi,

There are only two airlines that fly into Rochester- Northwest and American. Minneapolis is the hub for Northwest so if you fly Northwest you will fly to Minneapolis first before coming to Rochester.

American flies direct from Chicago. I would suggest either flying American via Chicago or

Fly into Minneapolis and take the shuttle (van) to Rochester. There are two different shuttle companies making multipl,e trips per day to and from Rochester to Minneapolis. Rochester Direct is one of the shuttle companies.

Hope this is helpful to those who will be interviewing at Mayo.
