Going to rounds during interview

Hello,

A psychiatric program as a part of its interview, will have its interviewee's round with the current residents. Any ideas on how I should prepare for it? What to expect? What should I go in knowing? Or do I stand quietly in the back ground?

one program i interviewed at did this. we did table rounds, then saw a few patients as a small group. i chose to be quietly in the background. one guy tried to ask questions trying to look smart but, to me, looked like he was trying too hard. they dont expect much from the applicants. its psych, so theyre selling their program to you.

Personally I'd stand quietly in the back. Asking too many questions can seem a little gunnerish, imo. Certainly, never ever show up a resident -- our egos can be small.

at mayo we didnt stand out. everyones in suits.

When Mayo had us sit in on rounds, nobody tried to pimp us or anything like that. Just try to be polite and unobtrusive. If this is indeed Mayo that you're talking about, I think the point of it is more to give you an idea of what things are like there to help you decide if you would fit in there rather than for it to be some kind of "test".

Ah, good to know. I knew that the IM guys at Mayo wear suits, but I didn't realize that they do that in psych too...

And it's probably also good to know that they won't pimp us on rounds. I haven't done a psych rotation in several months, so I was wondering whether I need to brush up... I really want to do well at that interview...

You will stand out being the only one wearing a suit. That said, you will stand out all day. Residency applicants look like residency applicants everywhere they go in the hospital. Everyone is used to it. No reason to feel self-conscious.

Yup--you're wearing a suit and not bringing food. Therefore applicant, not drug rep.

This happened to me at one of the programs I interviewed at. I just kind of listened and looked interested. They didn't ask me any questions, but they did ask the patient to kind of give me an explanation of some of the psychotherapy activities that they have done.

Agreed. Shut up and look interested. Nodding occasionally or making a frowning face to make it look like you're thinking are acceptable.
