If I go to a school near the west coast and want to do residency in the east coast, will it be more difficult for me to match on the east coast than if I went to school on the east coast? A school I really like is on the west but I also have the option of staying on the east coast. The west school is a "better" school than the east ones, but I don't know if I want to practice in that location forever. Any input would be much appreciated!

If the west school is high tier it should not be an issue. You can always do your auditions on the east too and convey your ties to the east coast when applying to residency programs.

How high tier would it have to be to matter? If we're talking rankings, the west school is higher than my other options by about 40-50 ranks, but not a T10

Is the west school top 30? Top 20?

Are you from the east coast originally? Any ties there? If the answers to those two questions are no, then yes, you’ll have a harder time matching there from a west coast school compared to an east coast school, simply because programs may thinking the likelihood of you moving there is low.

If we are talking University of Washington, don’t apply. They won’t accept you as an east coaster.

If we are talking UCLA/UCSF then you good...I am trying to think of other *high ranking* west coast schools...

But anyway, as others have noted, if you have east coast ties then matching back east shouldn’t be a big issue. Your bigger problem will be getting in to one of those California schools as an East coaster.

Stanford and UCSD are top 20.

Keck and Davis are both #30
I knew Stanford, but that is T10 (OP said not T10)

Like Goro says, there are 50 schools that are T30, 30 schools that are T20, and 20 schools that are T10 lol

You said UCLA and UCSF earlier and those are top 10 also LOL

Are they? Well hell, that goes to show how arbitrary labeling anything outside of the ‘big names’ really is.

Outside of:
Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins, NYU, Columbia, Stanford, Vanderbilt(?)...who am I missing for ‘the big names’

I don’t understand what you’re being sarcastic about. UCSF and UCLA are clearly T10 😕

Haha UCSF is top 10 by any reasonable standards. Rank, peer rep, PD rep, research funding, competitiveness of matching there (e.g. it's a Big 4 IM along with Hopkins/Harvard). You name it

Anyways OP I second the advice about checking out the match list. Like if we're talking about USC and you see everyone in the class matching west coast, then maybe worry about it. I bet their list would have people going all over the country though

I've actually been accepted and am making a decision - sounds like the consensus is that going west won't be a problem if people match on the east!

There’s nothing wrong with the “culture” of USC. It’s with the administration and the higher ups.
So...If there is a high propensity for bad personnel in their administration...wouldn’t that suggest a poor administrative culture?

Not necessarily. The admin has been very bad a handling problems that come up with a very small group of people.
