in july 07. Can u guys recommend what books to read before hand? Thanks

congrats. you will have plenty to read while you are in residency. you will be given lectures, assignments, etc., during all your 4 years+. if you must read something, i would recommend familiarizing yourself with some common diseases that you will see during the internal medicine as that rotation could be stressful. other than that....relax.

Pscyhiatry on Call
Get the mini-Kaplan & Sadock, don't waste your money on the big ones if your medical library will probably have the bigger ones.
Get a bunch of medical programs on your palm pilot. I found 5Minute Medical Consult and 5MEmergerncy Consult the best.
Get Epocrates on your PDA.

Try to use your PDA to contain all of your non throw away data. Otherwise you're going to carry too many crib notes.

What you're going to want to (re)learn

Mental Status Exam
H&P
Suicide assessment
Taking down a violent patient (with antipsychotics)
Retraints
Interpreting lab values & vital signs: yes we psyche docs are supposed to do that too
Getting admission orders for psyche down
Learn how to write commitment papers
Learn how to write consults

By the time you get this stuff down well you're probably already going to in the 2nd to 3rd month of the residency.

Repeating the above---

Relax. Don't worry too much. You're not going to be the only green one there, and if the program's any good they'll assign you someone to help you wade your way around.

Check the 2 book threads from last year that I recently bumped.

If you want to read one book only, MGH Psych update and board preparation....
