Anyone remember what associated disease he was referring to? All I can remember is what TIPS stands for: Tricuspid Insufficiency, Pulmonic Stenosis

I think I remember that he was referring to carcinoid syndrome....how it can affect the right side of the heart or something....but double check. It is on one of his GI lectures.

Yes thats right. As with things venous (i.e excessive serotonin, IV drug nastiness), the right side of the heart is usually affected more than the left side. Carcinoid syndrome will affect the right heart valves to a much greater extent, and I think thats where this mnemonic comes from, although he never specifically mentioned it to us.

Tricuspid Insufficiency and Pulmonary Stenosis...so that was right... it is for the effects of Carcinoid Syndrome on the heart.

I also remembered he also said that even though the #1 place for a carcinoid TUMOR is the appendix ....it usually does not metastisize to the liver b/c the tumor would need to be larger than 2 mm or cm or something and the appendix is too small for that....so the terminal illeum carcinoid tumor can metastisize to the liver and travel to the right side of the heart leading to flushing, diarrhea,ets, and TIPs.

Totally correct. Carcinoid syndrome always arises from intestinal metastasis to the liver, which does not happen from appendiceal carcinoid. He has a great pic of the appendix with a tumor and asks about what the MC sequelae is, I think the answer is something like 'uncomplicated recovery' or something, but the big distractor is carcinoid syndrome.
