Golden Key?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone!
I was just invited to join the golden key international honor society. Is joining this worth the money? Has anyone else here joined?

If it's like 95% of honor societies, it's a waste of time/money.

paying money to join an honor society is stupid

that is all

I never understood the fascination with ending posts with "that is all." Posters are like a warped version of bugs bunny with their "thats all folks". Really, is it just some way to add some ******ed attitude to your post so you don't sound like such a tool?

it's meant to express that i feel like the topic has now been explored completely, that the final word has been said, that this thread has been perfected by my comment

Honors societies are not always a waste, but don't join unless you are active in it. If there is a local chapter at your school that involves volunteer opportunities, etc., go ahead and join, but otherwise, all you get is a stole for graduation, and unlike Phi Beta Kappa, anyone with over a 3.5 can get Golden Key, so it doesn't mean much to adcoms.

yup. do some research on it and see if it's really prestigious or just a way to get money out of college students.

By the way. CONGRATULATIONS. Everyone in this thread has been selected to join the Depakote National Merit Honor Society.

This prestegious society is very exclusive and only selects its members from the best candidates available at the time.

To join, PM Depakote with your Credit Card Number, Social Security Number (for identification purposes only ^_~) and join now! 😀

completely useless society unless you are active in it

Honor societies are bull feces. They are always based on some sort of broad-sweeping objective criterion. Hence, they add absolutely no information to an application (the ADCOMs already know your GPA) except to say, "I am dumb/arrogant enough to pay money to join an honor society."

By the way, lizt, I officially award you the first annual "best human being on the planet" award based on your brilliance, dedication to excellence, and overall good looks. Send me $50, and I will send you a certificate of authentification and a vial of my semen to splash on your stupid face.

Wow man, that's pretty bold.

actually i chose to join golden key because that honor society actually shows up on your transcript. secondly it offers discounts for car insurance, kaplan test prep courses, and a few other ****s. i wouldnt join every honor society that sent an application to you because they do cost a lot of money with seemingly little to no benefit but golden key is pretty prestigous.

i paid $60 to join golden key and all i got was this stupid paper certificate. -_-

of course, honors societies are never really worth joining unless you plan on becoming active and assuming a leadership position.

If you are elected to Phi Beta Kappa, then join...only 10 percent of undergraduates at liberal arts universities are invited to join, with election by the faculty....so I would definitely join Phi Beta Kappa if invited...I think medical school admission committes respect that honor.

Yes, this is what I mentioned before...nearly every Rhodes/Marshall/other insanely prestigious fellowship recipient gets Phi Beta Kappa, usually as a junior - another good one is Alpha Epsilon Delta, the pre-med honor society (again, if you are active), and then honors societies within your majors (ie, political science, chemical engineering, etc.). The full list of recognized honor societies is at http://www.achsnatl.org/

Typical pre-med response right here. Gee, joining an honor society wont help me boost my GPA, so it's worthless. 🙄

Honor societies are worthless if you don't get involved with them. However, if you join the right one, you can gain access to a lot of things that are actually worth while, unlike just padding your gpa.

That pretty much sums up the whole discussion.

No problem.

Wow man, that's pretty bold.

Sheesh. I hope someone appreciated my hyperbole. I got a warning by an admin via PM.

You misinterpreted my post on multiple levels...

1) I am long past med school applications, so it is silly to accuse me of any sort of bias or naivete.

2) I was claiming that being a member of an honor society in itself is not impressive because it provides no additional information. Would you be impressed if someone told you he won an award for scoring above 40 on the MCAT (more impressed than the high score alone)? Of course not. It would be a meaningless award.

However, if you join the right one, you can gain access to a lot of things that are actually worth while, unlike just padding your gpa.

3) Perhaps, but out of all the leadership, social, and learning opportunities out there, why would anyone choose to become involved in an honor society. Be it a sports clubs, a film club, a medical volunteer position, a politcal advocacy experience...ALMOST ANYTHING would be more fun, rewarding, and noble than working for an honor society. Where is the nobility in an honor society? Is it keeping the bureaucracy alive to bestow a meaningless award on the next group of suckers who obtain a certain GPA?

I got tons of honor society invites as an undergraduate, and I promptly threw them in the trash despite the protestations of an advisor. For that, I stand proud.

Wow, that's an odd perspective.

There's nothing wrong with joining an honor society. They aren't corrupt or evil. Just don't do it if your only intentions are to look really impressive....like just about every other EC.

I understand what you are saying, but I think you also misinterpreted what I was trying to get at. I understand that joining an honor society in itself is not impressive, but that is not the point of most "nobel" honor societies. Instead, the point is to foster learning, involvment in extracurricular activities, and community service. There are many honor societies that don't even let you join unless you complete a certain amount of hours of community service/involvement. Certainly these types don't have any "suckers," as you call them.

Basically all i'm trying to say is, you have to be careful about how you label things and realize what real honor societies actually mean. Sure, there are plenty of them that simply try to increase membership and get $$ by doing so (without stressing involvment), but these are certainly not the only ones that exist.

I think you are taking a very pessimistic view of them, which is interesting since you claim to have never even joined one (which, btw, has nothing to do with whether you are in medical school or not)

However, I applaud you for realizing that you are better than those silly honor society scams that you received😉

In defense of golden key 🙂 :

I am the chapter president of my school, and i must say, golden key is really different from other honor societies.

The other honor societies that i am in arent very active, but golden key hosts yearly meetings with chapters from all over the world. their yearly convention is arizona if im not mistaken.

its really a great society to be involved in. headquarters really cares. they send representatives from every year to come on campus and check out how things are developing. they offer scholarship money, granted its not alot, but hey anything helps right?

in essence, golden key was probably the honor society that meant anything to me.

join ONLY if you plan to be involved and take a leadership position.

other wise, its just like all the other honor societies... steal money and dash 😛 oh yea and mail a ridiculous amount of junk mail to your house

(i apologize for my poor writing, i am going to face plant my keyboard any minute now 😛 )

Pffft...your pseudomeritocracy/kleptocracy is barely better than a pyramid scheme.

I think your views about honor societies have already been made very clear. I do not agree with you, but at least its clear. I don't think anything else is being gained by re-expressing your contempt for them so condecendingly.

I'm not an elitist. I'm just elite. 😉

I didn't report you. I just think telling someone to "splash a vial of semen in their face" is grossly inappropriate in just about every situation.

I hate how many of these honor societies are just scams. They remind me of those poetry contests people enter in the mail and then are sold some expensive book where there piece has been pubished for a fee. Its just another crook out there trying to make a buck. However, look into any honors society before turning it down. My junior year in undergrad, I got a letter from phi beta kappa offering me admission into their group and I ignored it. I almost ignored the one senior year, but luckily i mentioned it to my dad, and joined2 days before the deadline. So just be careful 🙂

I fell for the Who's Who in High Schools scam while in high school. My friend fell for it too....so did the other guys who didn't recieve an invitation. I neglected to put it on my college application.

yep, sure you are. you know parading your "eliteness" on internet forums is the way to prove to the world how "elite" you are.

Yea, I've never heard of this honor society, but I agree that they are mostly useless. If you feel like you need a nice leather-bound book with about 100 thousand kids' names in it, by all means, go for it 😴

In addition to being one of the most trivial "honor societies" (if even that), it has a horrible name. Either way, many people fell for it, so I won't hold it against you.

I enjoy the low interest rate on their american express card 🙂 currently being filled up with medical school application charges too!

Golden Key just sponsored the "Golden Keg" event here in Oxford, Ohio.
