Goljan/Kaplan before Second Year

I'm looking to use Goljan audio before I start my second year. Will that work while following along with his rapid review book? Or are his lectures too difficult to follow without a good background.

Or would it be better to do Kaplan videos? If so, I'm choosing between pathology and pharmacology. What would be a better use of time?

If you don't have a background, you will take A LONGGG time to get through those stuff.

When I say background, I mean having had the material presented to you once. Keep in mind, these are review lectures too.

With that said, I would say its still possible, but it will take a long time.

thats what i figured. not sure if its worth the time.

if I don't listen to them now, I was thinking about listening to them while I learned the material in class. but everyone keeps saying goljan is so good because he integrates. Im thinking that might make it hard to "listen as I go"

It's best to listen as you go. Read Robbins beforehand. The integration part is great but you need the individual pieces first before you can put them together. Lots of people did this by listening to them all a second time during boards studying.

Definitely dont listen to it pre second year. Listen to it as you go.

Read robbins along w/ your path course. I have yet to touch RR Path or Goljan Audio (and don't plan to for Step 1). His book is the size of FA and if you made the effort to read all the other med books along the way (i.e. Lippincotts Biochem, which is very good btw), you'll have the necessary base required for focusing your time on just FA when that time comes ..

Just a thought to help you limit your resources.

I got nothing out of Goljan during school because it is just to sparse for med school exams where they want to quiz you about irrelevant minutiae from their powerpoints.

However, after the year and seeing all the material once the connections he makes will blow your mind!

If you really want to do any kind of studying over your post M-1 summer, keep it at a light review, and don't worry about new material - that's what your next 9 months of hell is for.
Relax, get outside, and if you REALLY want to hit the books a little, I would suggest maybe a light physiology review (maybe read one BRS chapter a week?) or maybe occassionally whip out Netter flashcards or peek at biochem. I had a buddy that read through the Embryo and Biochem sections of 1stAid, and also just looked through the anatomy and Phys over the summer, which I thought was a decent idea.

spot on about the powerpoints. after a while during 1st year i just decided to partially ignore what they test and worry about whats board relevant. made for some more studying because they spend a lot of time focusing on crap that doesnt matter.

whats a better book to follow along with? robbins or Rapid review? Not sure if rapid review is "all over the place" because of the integration goljan likes
