Hi,

What do you recommend I use to go along with Goljan path audio lectures? His rapid review or his notes? Where can I get his notes? Thanks.

There is supposed to be a new rapid review edition coming out soon. They originally said end of November but it is still not out. The last one was 2004.

Does the new RR have tabulated up and down arrow stuff, which has all those positive and negative feedback relations...

yup....i just got through my endocrine unit in school.....almost every other page in that section had summary charts w/ up and down arrows.....very helpful to test yourself w/

i love how med students get soo excited when new books come in...its soo dorky..yet im the same way 😎

What do you guys think? I just ordered the new RR and it should get here in a few days. Is one book enough or should I also get BRS Pathology?

this one book is more than enough and integrates lots of concepts....stick w/ this one as well as his audio!

The new version of the book has a lot more pictures and they are actually on the page when it talks about the disease, instead of all of them at the end (like first aid). I also find it easier to look at/retain the info than BRS because it isn't so wordy. As for what I've gone through so far, I give it two thumbs up.

yup, i also give it 👍 👍

i kind of revolted at school for this last exam and spent 80% of my time studying with goljan audio/RR. it made me realize that goljan just knows all the IMPORTANT concepts - things he harps on were all over my exam. i like that when i spend 2-3 hours a day studying for step through goljan that it's also applicable to school exams. if goljan covers something that my school doesn't cover, i assume it is important for the step... if my school dwells on something goljan doesn't, i assume it's not important for the step.

Is the Audio that everybody is referring to while using RR the one that is labeled Day 1 - 5 and goes by systems?

yea i just bought mine from bookstore also and have not opened the shrinkwrap, just admirin it for now (i have a thing for new books and the new book smell 😀 ) anyways, so is this book the same as his notes for general and systemic path? or do we need to look at those also for minor differences, if there are any?

i am wandering this gorjan note is something u can use for rapid review of usmle, it is the sort of text book, some one please tell me

Subject - # of lectures
Cell Injury -2
Inflammation - 2

Neoplasia -3
Heme-8
Cardio-4
Resp-3
Gastro-2
pancreas-2
renal-2
Gyn-2

It is 37 lectures total though because one of Nutrition lectures is combined with a Neoplasia lecture and a Heme lecture combined with a Neoplasi lecture.

If you go on Ebay and do search for "Goljan" one of the sellers should have a more detailed list.

u can find it on the internet if u look hard enough..i found it b4..but stored it on a flash drive i currently cant find lol...its a big file too! almost 100 mb pdf file and the audio is like 2 gb...thats easier to find..

The new edition is wonderful!!! I had the old one, and tossed that to the side now. This has COLOR pics, so I dont have to go back and forth to Robbins, and this is much easier to read, and has waaaay more info. I'm using this to study for class exams, and i'm able to retain a whole lot more too!!!!
Its a GREAT buy, get it now, so you can get through it all!!!!👍

ok im kinda disappointed in the new edition of goljan's rapid review, because comparing it with his lecture notes, the latter have more info so far that i see that is not included in his book. and the pictures are not allllll the pictures included from his path slides w/c i thought it would be . 🙁 like for instance, i am on chap 2, and in his general path notes he lists a bunch of the different types of interleukins and their key functions, but in the book, only lists IL-1, IL-6, IL 8 in a table. I guess mb the others are listed elsewhere i hope, but his notes seemed better organized in that manner, oh and also he talks bout lineloic acid in more detail in his notes and the essential fatty acids , whereas in the book linoleic acid is only mentioned briefly and no mention of the fatty acids that it is derived from or the arachidonc acids. 🙁 🙁 just annoyed that have to keep annotating the book, i thouight it had everything included from his notes since everyone seemed so excited about it . oh well, i guess i'll stop bein lazy and write in the stuff its missin

In some ways, I have to agree. I also do not like the slick feel of the pages, nor do I like the page setup. When you fold the book to read it, as I callously do, it's hard to see all of what you're reading. Nothing's perfect, but since someone else provided a critique. Oh, btw, my RRS Goljan Path 2004 (1st edition) is for sale if anyone wants it. It's actually not that much different from the 2nd ed. PM for details.

I absolutely agree and just noticed this last night as I started to listen to Goljan for the first chapter. I was debating for at least an hour if I should follow the notes instead and dump the book or what. I don't even like the way the book is layed out. I think I might just go with the notes that I had printed out already. 🙄

The question is, did he take it out because he doesn't think they're high-yield, or did he take them out just because. After all, it's suppose to be a review book and we're comparing what was suppose to be important 2002 vs. 2007 - that's 5 yrs.

my guess is that its somewhat streamlined...

For all the 12 pages I ended up reading over break, I compared and tried both Goljan notes vs. RR. Although the notes have more info and seem more complete, I find it most helpful to read a section of the book, then listen to audio. This is the method I'm going to use when studying for boards (along with BRS) and won't be using the notes. However if somebody already has the notes, I'm not sure if it's worth it to spend the $35 to buy RR as it's virtually the same thing (plus pictures).

For those that had the notes also, are there seperate sections on Phys, etc. or is it all Path? I thought i heard he had a complete set of USMLE review notes. If that's true how do those sections compare?

yeah I read the book, and then listen to audio.
I think its worth the $35, I like having the pics there and not having to look the up or have to deal with my big Robbins

Man, props to you all that can read the notes. I had all of them printed out and used them for a while, but they're so disorganized that I chucked them when the new RR came out. RR is 100 times better to me.

yeah i agree its too much hassle, better off just dealing with the book

so what's the consensus on this? Is the original RR book the best to read with his audio? Are his notes the best? or is the new book the best one?

Which one has the best pics?

i dont know about his other notes, but the newer rapid review book is mch better and hands down better pics....they are in color and there are more!

I think RR is a great book. It's in pure outline/table format and leaves plenty of room to make your own notes. It also has many full-color pics.

Goljan's "500 page notes" have no pictures and are pretty disorganized (I couldn't stand to read them).

BRS is in more of a prose form and every page looks very "wordy". There is not much space to make your own notes at all. The only pics it has are black/white pics in the practice questions at the end of each chapter.

Best thing to do is go to your school bookstore and check them out, since it really comes down to personal preference.

I own, BRS, RR original, and the notes, my question basically is, should I use the new RR Goljan instead of the old one?

Excuse me for my stupidity, but everyone keeps talking about the difference between his notes and his RR, but where would one go about buying his audio?

Does the audio come WITH his notes? Or do you buy that serperately?

In humble ignorance,
Dean
