Goljan RR - skip hepatobiliary chapter of it?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
um...anyone else with a more nuanced answer who has actually read goljan and used it to study?

Pathoma is not nearly as complete I feel. I have enough time -almost a year that rr is still worth it. I'll do pathoma come jan

My studying of Goljan is not for material. It is to ensure that I am confident when I face pathoogy material. Because I will know so much I wont have to panic that I don't know enough if I get stumped by a question...

Wishful thinking. More like you'll be overwhelmed and won't remember half of it. I have RR. It's gathering dust on my shelf.

Hmm. Personally, to ensure I knew pathology material, I'd study the pathology material, old sport.

Wow you're such a toolbag.

Sanjiv, study whatever you want. That section is probably overkill for Step 1, but if you have this long and you want to study it, go ahead. It's your score, not anyone else's.

No need for personal attacks, old sport.

I used Goljan RR for step 1 (read it 3x throughout the year) and am a strong proponent of it.

I'd read through the Hepatobiliary chapter at least once, just to see everything, but when it comes down to studying I would just focus on the stuff that overlaps FA.

As a side note, I believe Pathoma and RR serve different purposes.
Pathoma is good for really learning the pathophys behind everything (which is super HY for step 1), while RR is a bit more comprehensive and literally lists out almost everything you need to know about a condition (which IMO is also pretty HY for step 1).

I think both are valuable for the boards and are complementary sources, as opposed to alternatives to each other.

On the other hand, I believe Goljan Audio and Pathoma serve similar purposes, in which case I would hands-down go for Pathoma. Goljan audio is bloody useless, and irritating to listen to.

Thank you for at least siding with me.

Everyone claims that I'll forget RR. And then, in the same breath, I hear people say how valuable Gunner Training is. Perhaps, but my methodology is similar to GT. I basically review the night before what I studied a week ago everday so its constantly fresh in my mind. Granted I wont review as often when school starts but I should be able to review some consistently.

Regardless, perhaps I will read through hepatobiliary.

Question for you Aclamity-how did you manage to go through RR 3x? When did you start.

i don't understand why you asked the question if your only wanting to hear one side of the story. it seems like you made your mind up already and its totally up to you whatever resource you use.

Umm if you have a year to study why don't you just do both RR and Pathoma? You will want to do them both as u go thru class, ie since day 1 of pathology. If u haven't read goljan before step 1 devoted study time, then those 8 weeks is not the time to start. Personally I love goljan, I always listened to his audio while I read the pertinent chapters.

I got through RR ~3x. I did each chapter twice during a system and then once during dedicated time.

In the end, just do what you want to do. Goljan is more than Step 1 will test you on, but you'll be extremely well prepared because of it.

Can I skip the hepatobiliary section in goljan? Its 100 pages long and I feel like it may be low yield.

Whats your take on it people?
Dat ish cray!

GI/Hepato is actually pretty good and pretty high yield from what ive seen with uworld so far. have yet to take test so i dunno. but skipping any chapter in RR is straight up cray! pathoma is good, but it doesnt go in as much depth as RR.

id just do RR/audio/pathoma followed by hepato/gi questions in robbins/uworld/kaplan/rx/GT. you got the time. stop slackin'! THIS IS SDN!

...lol but really its a great chapter. give it a looky.

2x during relevant material in MS2, 1x during dedicated study time. It's a slow read at first, but gets faster as you re-read it. Much like FA.

My initial comment on siding with me had nothing to do with the OP. I made the comment because it was tangential to what I wanted to know-whether I should read hepato or not.

I think I will read it but just not now. I'll do it when systems begin.

My goal now is to just get done with first year material covered in the book-first 8 or 9 chapters. Some of them I skip over because they're dense but plan to come through again when the relevant system is covered.
