Which pathology book is better to use for boards and classes. I have both but I don't want to waste time using too many different sources. Anyone have any input on them?

When I saw this post...I thought Gojira vs Pantera...funny how we see what we want to see. Pathoma is good though!

Bottom line is goljan has more info than pathoma. If you're paying attention and learning in class, pathoma would be fine. Otherwise goljan is the way to go.

My plan for M2 and what I did for the end of M1 (we did intro path stuff) was to watch the Pathoma vids and then read Goljan for areas that weren't immediately clear. For example, that would be the clotting cascade or bilirubin metabolism and liver lab tests for me. The Pathoma vids are soo quick if you're watching on 1.5x I don't think it's a large time commitment at all during systems. Doing 100% of both might be a lot, but I'm definitely planning on going through a decent amount of Goljan. If you can get your hands on the audio, it's great while working out or running.

Unless you review all of your class slides, I recommend using Goljan. The old formula of FA + Pathoma +UWorld does not have the guarantee that it used to.

both. its not a waste of time and its doable.

This is what I fear from talking to older classmen.

I have pathoma videos and book and the Goljan book, I do not have the audio. That being said is it better to use the pathomas book or goljan book for classes and then which one should I use for boards? Thanks again for responses guys I appreciate the help.

Yeah, that combo was much better back in the 1970s.

Pathoma for studying, Goljan for car + gym

WTF are you doing in the gym where you can listen to pathology lectures and comprehend it? When I'm training, I'm probably more likely to smash my head into the wall and go super saiyan than I am to listen to school stuff and have it work out(no pun intended).

There are so many SDN threads on this, search. I would put the over/under at 100 different threads.

Probably lifting weights so you can listen.

In the first couple of days in each block, run through the corresponding Pathoma chapter(s) and highlight in the text. Then, once you've gotten those essentials down, use Goljan as your textbook for the remainder of the block. When you study for the final/NBME, go through Pathoma again to set things in order.

That's pretty wrong man. FA + Pathoma + Uworld covers 95% of the path that will be on the real deal. Goljan's book got me more pharm points than path points on the real deal in retrospect, but I would still go through it again just because of the pics/descriptions. At it's heart, Step 1 is a convoluted vocabulary test. I'd say a good 50% of the exam comes down to knowing the precise definitions of terms.

At no point during my board exam did I think "boy, I really wish I went through another pathology book". The exam is tough but it's fair. You aren't going to get very much obscure pathology that only a path resident would know. However, not knowing the basics of pathology will tank your score.

With the increasing frequency of " best next step"-type questions on Step 1, Goljan is becoming more and more useful. Pathoma is terrific at explaining pathologies, and is still a staple. But Goljan has a clear advantage when it comes to clinical management.

All of this said, if an M2 wants to focus solely on his classes w/o regard to the boards (for now), Pathoma + FA + UWorld is certainly enough.

Wtf are you talking about? Old formula? Pathoma has been around for three years. Goljan has been used for way longer

Old formula in that Step 1 seems to be changing fairly substantially. I've seen many posts about that combo being sufficient, but I think that this is no longer necessarily the case if one wants to rock the exam.

I got a 239 with goljan, FA, uworld only.

Note: I am also an idiot. If you're even halfway intelligent that combination should work fine for you

Goljan audio or text or both? Congrats that is an awesome score!

next best step is common sense and any med student who paid attention in the first two years should know what to do. I never once thought "gee, I wish I had some clinical experience so that I can answer this question" on my board. A bit of reading comprehension, test savviness and common sense is all you really need to answer these types of questions. Secondly, I had maybe 5 questions of the "next best step." Going through 30+ hours of Goljan (which is severly out of date anyways) chasing those points is pretty foolhardy when you consider the fact that path/biochem/anatomy/biostats is probably 250 questions.

I used pretty much only RR Path + Uworld + Pathoma and I did extremely well on the boards. I didn't even take a full pass through FA.

???

RR Path is Goljan.

Also, as you know, individual exams are quite variable. I had 10+ BNS questions.

When someone says Goljan, I'm thinking Goljan audio, not his book. His book is just a super-condensed Robbins; there is zero "next management" in his book. Hell, Pathoma has more "next step" pearls in his videos than RR Path has in the entire book.

I'm not going to get into an argument about this.

I'm just going to reiterate my advice to the OP: use Goljan (both text and audio) and Pathoma throughout the year.

Just use the Rapid Review Pathology book by Goljan PLUS the Goljan audio. Done. His book is not "super-condensed Robbins".

Most med students are casual exercisers, if at all. 3 scoops of c4, death metal, and intra in your blender bottle isn't the norm.

I don't take pre-workout or whatever the f*ck intra is, because I dont need something to pump me up to lift. I still don't think you could focus, even with a pretty non-strenuous exercise. However we'd get into a whole debate about physiology and biochem if we talked about non-strenuous exercise(I'm not a fan).
