Thanks for your reply Doctor Eliza. I'm interested in books on professional development as a counselor, different theoretical approaches (preferably comparing different approaches), and how to books.

Could you be more specific? How to books? Books on the experience of being a therapist? Books for what point in a person's career? Books for clients?

Thanks!

For general overviews, I've always liked A Guide to Treatments that Work (Nathan and Gorman) and Clinical Handbook of Psychological Disorders (Barlow). I wouldn't be surprised if one or both of those ends up being assigned in your grad school classes.

Systems of Psychotherapy by Prochaska and Norcross. It is a healthy sized textbook with each chapter devoted to specific branches of psychotherapy (e.g. humanistic, CBT, psychoanalysis, feminist). The authors offer you the main ideas behind each theory, how they would work in practice, and at the end of each chapter is a commentary that contrasts the theory you just read with other theories and 'argues' each point of difference. Lots of good research citations as well.

Excellent, thanks!
