Does anyone know any good books by or about premed or med school students?

Also, what is the best "how-to-get-into-medical-school-(in-4000-easy-steps)" book? 🙂

There are many but my favorite was
"getting into med school" by Isserson who wrote the well known and similarly titled book for getting into residency.

I just bought The House of God--sort of a Catch-22 for interns. It's not really guidance of any sort, but it's a good read ...

I used The Complete Guide to Premedical Success, by Gregory Andrews. It's also a good one for your parents to read if they want to understand this whole process.

Here are some good medical books that I've read:

Julia's Mother by William Bonadio

Learning How the Heart Beats: The Making of a Pediatrician by Clair McCarthy

The Intern Blues by Robert Marion

Gifted Hands By Ben Carson

"The Complete Book to Medical Schools," this book is put out by the princeton review people and it is said to be "the buyer's guide to medical schools." I used it as the how to get into medical school guide, and it gives stats/411 for each school.

I really liked the book A Not Entirely Benign Procedure by Perri Klass. Perri Klass went to med school in the 80s, and this book is a collection of essays she wrote throughout those 4 years plus essays on more current medical ethics/issues. Not only is it interesting to read her experiences, in both her personal and professional lives, it is also amazing to see how much has changed in the medical profession (like how we treat AIDS patients) in so short a time. Highly Recommended.

I am also in the middle of reading Women in Medical Education, a collection of essays from different doctors discussing their own or other women's experiences throughout med school and into their professions. The book is divided into sections by issue. Very interesting so far.

Another great book is "learning to play god" by Dr. Marion as well. It outlines his experiences getting in and surviving medical school. It is a great read, especially for those interested in peds.

House of God is great stuff. Though its more related to residency years and perhaps the last two years of med school.

Any woman considering a career in surgery (hell, men should read it, too) should read "A Woman in a Surgeon's Body" by Joan Cassell. She is an anthropologist whose culture of interest is surgery. I had a pretty schizo reaction to the book: On the one hand, it scared the bejeezus out of me. On the other, I'm thinking how important it is to get more women into surgery.

Other books: The Blood of Strangers (by an ER doc--the writing is OK but the stories are interesting albeit not polished). Healing Lessons is another book, about a GI oncologist whose wife contracts the cancer he specializes in ... it's ghost-written (although told in 1st person), but is a very moving story.
