Would that free test that NBME offers (like 150 questions or something like that), be a good diagnostic to start with before studying? I don't need a full-length test, just something to do in a morning that will give me some sort of idea where I stand right now.

In my case it was quite consistent between blocks and with other diagnostic tests I took when I started. Just be aware it may diagnose you at the upper end of your spectrum. I also took it at Prometric for a fee to familiarize myself with test center environment and security, laminated sheet and markers for note-taking etc. It's a good investment of 0 to 50 bucks.

So this is the 150 Question test that they give you at Prometrics when you pay for it? Its a good thing I found that out because I was going to do the questions, but I'm already schedule to take the test at Prometrics for the same reason as the above poster (familiarize myself with the center). I have copies of some of the older ones, so maybe I'll do those ones instead.

which NBME exam is the one that's given at the site?

I'm not actually sure. I've been told that its "the free one that they give you on the NBME website." So really you can do the exact same test for free, but I'm paying $48 just to get to take a practice exam in the same environment I'm going to take the real deal. So now I just wanted to make sure I don't accidentally take the exam that they'll give me when I show up at Prometrics haha

PS does anyone know how to correlate the scores from these 150Q "free" exams to an estimate of how well I'd do on the real deal?
