*edit* legal is one of the best in the COUNTRY?! i thought it was a nice place but...guess that's good to know 🙂

don't worry about being cloe by BU - the T is awesome and can take you from one part of town to the other in no time at all, and for little cost.

I strongly recommend heading over to China town. House of Pho has $4 meals(we're talking a nice plate full of thai/chinese style food. There's a little shack in front of Tufts dental school where you can get a heap of food for $2 and two boxes of food for $3. i Kid you not! Saigon sandwich shop (also near tufts new england medical center) - cheapo food there too(sandwich for $2.50. These are all near kneeland st, new england medical center exit on the orange line

legal sea foods is nice, too. i also like this indian restuarant on mass ave(maybe 4 blocks away from legal sf) called bhindi bazaar. $7 buffet 😀

you can tell i'm el cheapo these days w/ my little budget 🙂 good luck at your interview, btw! bu's a kickass school and boston is a kickass town 🙂

for really good dimsum, you have to check out China Pearl in Chinatown. If you want a heavier lunch or a nice dinner, check out Penang. They have authentic Malaysian/Singaporean food that's really good. Also, check out the Chinese bakeries - they have yummy egg custard tarts and various sweet/savory buns. 🙂

A second for legal seafoods (or maybe a third...) Get the clam chowder, really good!

i've heard someone else mention china pearl for dimsum, too. time to check it out i suppose. penang...right in front of pho pasteur...? or am i thinking of something else?

riverie, u spend much time over at chinatown? i used to work at new england medical center so i got to know the area well, gastronomically speaking
😀

There are two Legal Seafoods in the Prudential center which is a quick cab or a long walk from BU. There is also on the waterfront near Quincy Market. Chinatown is a great idea too.

ok, gotta put in my 2 cents. my top picks:

pad thai cafe - the best pad thai i've found in boston and reasonably priced ($6-8 a meal) - it's on boylston street just off of mass ave in the fenway direction, next to little stevies.

sol azteca - the best mexican. real mexican. it's awesome. on beacon st, use the green C line st mary's stop. it's on the north side of the street, big yellow sign. and you gotta try the sangria.

india quality - right in kenmore square, the next block towards boston from the hotel commonwealth. awesome indian. awesome. i used to live next door. oh man.

antonios - cute little italian place. it's on cambridge st, you can take the red line to charles/mgh and then walk up cambridge st towards gov't center. it'll be on the right side a couple blocks up.

depending when you're coming (aka will baseball still be going on?), it might be fun to try boston beerworks, which is right over by fenway. microbrewery, food is typical for that type of place. but lots of fun to watch a game there.

g'luck with the interview!

captain jack, i go to school in Providence and I'm from Singapore, so my compatriots and I who are in Providence drive/bus down to Boston chinatown for a good chinese food fix once in a while! China Pearl is by far our favorite dimsum place. Penang is probably opposite a pho place, although I can't be sure. You can't miss it, its got a wooden paneling exterior and the interior has a lot of wooden decor, as well.

do you ever watch the food network? one of my fav shows is good eats in...

its been served at the last 5 or 6 presidential inagurations..just an interesting tid bit

As far as good places to eat that are close to the BU medical campus, there are a number of cafes and small restaurants within a few blocks of the school. A lot of students head to Andre's during lunch. You can get pitas, kabob and rice, salad, hummus, along with a wide variety of sandwiches and such. It's not fancy, but a decent place with a very reasonably priced menu. If you are looking for a place to eat the day before your interview or after it is over, there are a number of nice places on Newbury Street (many sidewalk cafes - if weather permits). Boston is definitely one of the best cities for seafood, and although Legal Seafood is worthy trying, the Chart House is on Boston Harbor and puts LSF to shame. It is a bit more pricey, but if you have a great interview, go ahead and splurge a little 🙂

Reading all these messages is making me hungry. I definitely had my heart set on some clam chowder. Although Chinatown is starting to sound pretty tasty right about now right too....I might have to bring some stretchy pants....thanks for the suggestions!!

Coming from Mass, I would not say Legal Seafoods is the best in Boston for seafood. Actually, its not even that good. A couple years ago it was good, now its an f-ing tourist trap. People who come to town head there to try clam chowder that was made two weeks before in a factory. There are plenty of better seafood resturants, head down to the financial district and the warf area. Also, best mexican is The Border Cafe over in Harvard square. The best BBQ is Red Bones Cafe over on the Somerville/Cambridge line.. Best steak house, I always like Morton's but thats not really a Boston thing. If you want to truly experience Boston food then head to Quincy Market and try some stuff from there, good food.

Yeah I would say that Legal seafood is not one of the best. There is a place on the harbor - place has a lower level dining area decorated like the cabin of a boat - they serve the best darn seafood I've ever had. Sorry but I can't remember the name.

You might be talking about No Names. It is a seafood restaurant on the wharf that is very no frills - paper napkins and paper cups. It has bench style seating and is decorated like the inside of a boat. I have had excellent seafood there.

I forgot to mention Chow Chou in Chinatown on Beech St. It is a great value and has been my favorite for Chinese in Boston for many years. Try the clams with black bean sauce - simply amazing.

how about the place where everybody knows your name?

Don't forget about Fire and Ice

It has great all-you-can-eat meals where you pick the ingredients and sauce for a strir fry and they grill it in front of you...it's awesome, especially if you're bringing your appetite and some stretchy pants!!

I'm a California boy, but spent a couple years in Boston.

Fire and Ice = Mongolian BBQ, which is all over the place over here on the West Coast. But Fire & Ice is a weak, wanna-be impersonation of.. where the grill is set somewhere between "warm" and "slightly hot". Your food comes out kinda stewy... it's a very elegant place, but the food disappointing.

Pho Pasteur (sp?) is great. Can't remember if there's one near BU... but I think so. Best Pho place I've ever been, east or west coast. Legal's never seemed exceptional to me.

There's a Pho in Harvard Square and one in the Theatre district. If you've got the dough give Newbury street a try.

Otherwise Chinatown is pretty close to BU just take the Silver line express bus which runs down Washington street to Chinatown.

Ok, I remember the place...it's called "Salty Dog" at the Faneuil Hall Market.

Just an aside, the T is actually not such a hot transportation system, and there is no T stop all that close to BU med.

A good place for lunch around BU med is Flour. Three-minute walk, excellent soups, sandwiches, salads, etc.
