Ok so here's a brief summary of my situation..

I started my freshman year as an economics major before deciding to pursue medicine. It wasn't until my spring semester that I decided that medicine was what I wanted. I still enjoy economics and will definitely keep that as my major, but I have added a physiology minor as well in order to complete pre-reqs plus bio chem, physio, and some other good classes..

Basically this forces me to graduate in 5 years which is not a problem but here is my dilemma.. There is this entrepreneurship program through my business school which is ranked very high in the country. In order to complete this program you must take additional classes on top of your major, making it very time consuming. I'm just wondering how med schools would look at such a program. Would they think that I am more interested in starting my own business rather than med school (because I'm not)? The way I see it, this type of program would become very beneficial down the road if I decide to start my own practice.

What do you guys think?

In my personal opinion, it would be just another time consuming stressor for you that you will not need.

You've already got a full plate. This extra program is NOT necessary for success in the medical field. Why risk stretching yourself too thin and not getting the highest grades possible before admissions?

If it were me I wouldn't do it. But that's just me.

Best of luck!!

If you're serious about starting your own practice, I bet this could be awesome. Sure, it may be more time consuming, and you need to make sure you can handle the load and rock your mcat. But a lot of docs say that med school was poor prep for the business they ended up running when they finished their residency.

But you wouldn't be able to stretch the truth too much when folks ask you what you want to do down the line, as long as you are clear you want to practice medicine. (A lot of MD/MBA's get flack as some don't do residencies and just go straight to phram industry.) It might be tough to say you want to teach for example and be believed.

Anyone else think of Animaniacs when they read this thread title?

You should do the program if you think you will really enjoy it, will learn a lot from it, and are passionate about the subject. You should not do the program as a way to strengthen your app or because its at a prestigious school. If you are picking the program for the latter, then it will probably just add extra stress and is not a good way to find/pursue a passion. And don't worry about graduating in 5 years, just make sure you make those 5 years worthwhile. Good luck deciding!
