Hey everyone,
I am currently an 8th semester senior, graduating in dec. 09 (a semester late). I am going to take my mcat again in May because I didn't do very well the first time. A med student I know told me that I should contact and make appointments with the admission counselors/directors of different schools that I want to apply to and meet with them to discuss my app, gpa, ECs etc. just so that when my actual application comes in (I will be applying in June), they sort of have an idea? Is that a good idea or should I not bother with that at all?

Thanks

I wouldn't bother. First, they are quite busy now, and will be busy right through May and even June filling spots in the upcoming class. They get a short breather, and then the avalanche hits them again in June / July, around the time you should have already submitted.

What sort of idea do you want them to have about you? Or are you trying to get some idea of your competitiveness? Without that MCAT score, they won't be able to tell you a thing...

I think you already have a pretty good idea of what you need to do to be competitive. I don't think such an interview will serve you in any way unless you genuinely have questions about what their ideal student applicant would be like. I doubt you'd make points by expressing an interest in a program. On the other hand, I don't think such a visit will hurt you either.

Thanks for the feedback flip & Mobius

I think Mobius said exactly what I was thinking. Obviously I would want to know how competitive I'd be but like both of you said, it would be pretty unlikely for me to find that out by talking to them. But I would really want to know what a good student candidate is, in their eyes. Then I can decide where I stand instead of me asking them that. Since it probably wouldnt win me any extra points & not hurt me either, I think I am going to try to make appointments with the schools that are near me and not a bunch of hours away.

Just don't expect them to roll out the red carpet in the next two months...perhaps April would be a good time to try? - not really sure...

Nahh I am not going to be expecting anything when I go in there. Thanks again guys !
