Good jobs for Premeds

Search craigslist for things like "medical assistant." During my job search I found that most of the jobs in hospitals (which are the ones advertising in newspapers, monster, etc) were looking for certifications like cna. By contract doctors offices often don't care about these, and a lot are excited about having someone around who is actually interested in medicine and progressing in the field, rather than someone for whom it would be just a job.

Not necessarily true. Doctors in private practice tend to understaff their offices with workers who are only willing to work full time. I have never seen a flexible MA job anywhere. There are plenty of people who don't just treat it as a job, but in many ways a career. From an employers perspective that is just as admirable. These kinds of individuals take their job seriously, really love what they do and don't mind doing it everyday for the rest of their lives. They provide security in the workplace and in my opinion make a better investment than a pre-med student who will put school first and demand flexible hours which may be impossible given the demands of the job. The best health care related job you can do is any tech or entry level job in a hospital, preferably per-diem or nights.

Yeah I think pre-meds tend to forget that people actually pick up these entry-level clinical jobs as CAREERS. Not everyone is a pre-health student of some sort only doing these jobs as a stepping stone toward the greater goal.

I can see why in some cases people do not want to hire pre-meds. They tend to have pretty bad reputations because they can be flaky due to exams and not put forth full effort. Though I'm sure large hospitals that have tons of pre-meds (thus a revolving door) will take people since they will come and go quickly. I'm guessing smaller practices are probably looking for more career-minded folks, who thus would be more reliable.

Tips for getting a scribe job? How long does training take? When should I start looking if I want to begin work in the summer?

They already hired for summer here. I don't know about other places. I would just apply with your availability and they'll call you for interviews when they decide they need people.

What are some good jobs for premeds. A job that can be balanced w/ school and studies.
I worked as a phlebotomist through undergrad. The hospital where I worked hired me without experience and trained me on site. I worked 1-2 shifts per week during the school year and then more during breaks. It was great experience because I was able to see a lot of different areas of the hospital, and also interact with patients in a variety of situations. Overall, I would definitely recommend this if it is an option for you in your area
