Good laptop computer?

to current med students and new students what do you think about the laptop Dell is offering UCSF students? Is it a good deal? I am thinking of getting it for school.

It's a little on the high side. Case Western has the same laptop (more or less I think), for $1300. It's still better than what you could get off the regular Dell website, though.

How are you not having the same damn problems I am? Is it because we have different models (i have an inspiron 6000)? I hate this stupid Dell laptop. The pictures are all blury and the fonts are either humongous or super tiny 😡 I'm so annoyed. I'm tempted to send it back.

I got an Inspiron 6000 too and it is B-E-A-U-TIFUL! The only problem I have had (so far) is I couldn't get it to read and load my Windows XP Office CD...but after a little coaxing (beating and framming) it worked. Other than that it's been great.

Thinkpad is pretty cool, i pretty much only use my R51 for uni purposes - word, excel and powerpoint. it's a very reliable, quiet machine, at a reasonable weight. would happily recommend it to others. you can get lighter, more powerful, and more expensive thinkpads, but i personally think the R51/ R50 satisfy med school needs.

The T40p/T41p are probably the best notebooks made to date. They may not be the "best" in a specific area, but it's just a high quality machine. It's not the fastest, lightest, coolest laptop but it is just well-made. I recommend them highly. Can you tell I love mine? 🙂

check out the acer ferreri 4000, going to near $2200.
it's too rich for my blood, but for those of you with the means - the end is certainly justified.

I just bought an acer aspire online from Sams Club and it is a great notebook for under a 1000. The screen quality is amazing. I also got a 4 year warrenty from Sams for 80 bucks. It includes everything INCLUDING normal wear and tear.

For Windows-based laptops, there really is no equivalent to a Thinkpad in terms of reliability, build quality, and service. Of course, that's not to say that other laptop brands are bad - IBM is, for most, the gold standard.

If your med school doesn't require a Windows-based laptop, then you may want to try a Powerbook. I am not a Mac user myself (and probably won't be since OSU requires Windows for their software), but have heard nothing but good things about them.
