Hi, everyone. I just got my MCAT scores back, and I was relieved but a little frustrated. I realize that they are competitive, but I was hoping to apply to MSTP programs with my research focus being chemistry-related. Here are my credentials:
West Virginia University
Chemistry, B.S.; Biology minor; Spanish minor
GPA 4.0
MCAT 36R (13PS, 12BS, 11VR)
GRE Chemistry 820
ACS General Chemistry 68 (100th %ile)
ACS Instrumental Methods 38 (96th %ile)
RESEARCH
-National Science Foundation funded research internship at State Key Lab of Supramolecular Structure and Materials in Jilin Province, China. My project was the chemical synthesis of a low bandwidth small molecular for use in the donor layer of high-efficiency photovoltaic cells. Poster and presentation with this one.
-Departmental research under organic chemistry professor in the synthesis of biologically active indole derivatives for potential application as mild chemotherapeutics and antivirals.
-NIH internship in progress. Poster and presentation to come.
-Starting second departmental research project in the fall.
HONORS / AWARDS
-General Chemistry Award
-Organic Chemistry Award
-Outstanding Undergraduate Chemistry TA (average rating was 4.93/5.00)
-College of Arts and Sciences Scholar (awarded to 25 students in our college of ~8,000)
-Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholar
-Neil S. Bucklew Scholar (2nd highest scholarship given at our institution)
-University Merit Scholar (National Merit Corporation funded scholarship)
-Member of Phi Kappa Phi
COMMUNITY SERVICE & SHADOWING
200+ hours of community service (including service honoraries of which I've been either the President or Vice President each year, my church's music ministry, and other activities)
~40 hours of shadowing experience, including clinics and general surgery
TEACHING
-Undergraduate TA for general chemistry for 2 terms. Loved every minute of it.
HOBBIES / AVOCATIONS (I may include some stuff from here just to pique some interest. Not sure yet.)
-Classically trained in piano for 12 years.
-Classically trained in voice, and am currently in a choir that does some barbershop / a'capella stuff.
-I like to make youtube videos (covers of popular songs)
-I train for swimming and have done several open water 5k races. Want to compete in another late summer or early fall.
EMPLOYMENT (Probably won't include anything from here)
-Assistant coach for USA Swimming registered club team (Summer job. Served as interim head coach for a short time as well)
-Lifeguard for Parks and Recreation Commission (Summer job)
I don't want to be bashed for this thread. I legitimately want to know what my chances are of getting into MD PhD programs at schools like Harvard, Johns Hopkins, etc. I really wanted to get a 38 to feel more confident (if only I could have scored my average AAMC practice... sigh), but now I'm in that place where I'm about at the "average" score of these schools. Thoughts on whether to retake or not also appreciated. If you want any additional info, let me know. Thank you to all responders in advance!
