What are some really good books relating to medicine?

There's one that I can't recall the title of. It's by a Neurologist and is about different cases that the neurologist has dealt with. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I don't know if it's "good" or not, but it's still kind of a hot topic, and might be a relevant read before interviews..."Overdo$ed America." It's written by a doctor/professor from Harvard. The quotes on the back are from some other medical school folks, a prof from dartmouth and maybe a few others. I have a copy but haven't read it yet. I definitely think it has the feel of something worth at least knowing about going into interviews since it's relatively current, and deals with a lot of the issues of medicine that are in the front of the public's mind right now (Vioxx, Celebrex, etc)

I think the book you are thinking of is "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" by Oliver Sachs (sp?).

A good book that is very popular here is called "Complications" by Atul Gawande. Do a forum search on this book; it has been discussed thoroughly.

Another good book that I am reading right now is called "Severed Trust: Why American Medicine Hasn't Been Fixed" by George Lundberg, former Editor of JAMA. I think it is an insightful, easy-to-read book that spells out a lot of the issues of our current healthcare system. Its not too boring or technical a read either.

Cider House Rules, or you could watch the movie 🙂
Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis, good but depressing
Becoming a Doctor by Melvin Kotter (sp?), good, more recent book

I'm almost finished with this book (Overdo$ed America). I recommend that anyone pursuing medical school read it, as it also may have an influence on your residency/specialty choices. The writing is excellent, easy to follow, and undeniably persuasive. This book will probably make you very pissed off at the American health care system. However, it's well worth it.

Left Brain Right Brain --very interesting neuropsychology book

How the Cows Turned Mad --fascinating book about mad cow disease and CJD

The Hades Factor-- fiction; thriller/action book written by the same guy who wrote the Bourne Identity books. It's basically about these people who unleash a deadly disease all around the world and hold the cure hostage.

Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story

Five Patients by Michael Crichton is awesome as is A Case of Need, also Crichton (abortion-related story, I believe)

Cider House Rules is really good...not too much about medicine but John Irving is a great story teller

Gifts of Time by Dr. Fred Epstein (amazingly inspiring story about a neurosurgeon)

Really dorky but good reads are any book that is basically a collection of short stories about cases/patients...there are tons of these...just go to Barnes and Noble

If I can only remember the quote of how he put how horrible it was in reference to trying to put you in the position of the family if I remember correctly. Maybe I can furnish pics. I will read it next week after harry potter 😉
